I love how USDA’s conservation programs are so anodyne and blandly useless they are basically co-opted by opposing ideologies in otherwise vastly different administrations and nothing ever changes on the ground. www.usda.gov/about-usda/n...

Listening and reading about the Lee Co. Iowa proposed $15 billion steel mill all day and every time thinking that the southernmost portion of that county was "The Half-Breed Tract" instituted in 1824. It turned into a legal quagmire of land speculation - even Joseph Smith Jr. purchased land there.
Half Breed Survey assembled from the township maps of Samuel Morrison, 1838 by H. R. Harlan, 1925.

Quite happy to see (and buy!) pawpaws at the Iowa City farmers market - these are from people who planted trees but also have volunteer ones at their farm. Local native foods, diversified production, small scale farming. What’s not to like?

This is a tangent, but I get really creeped out by white people buying historical Native American artifacts that often should be rematriated. Buying art from contemporary artists who get a fair price in the process seems much more ethical to me. This is another Susan Point print, Memory.

Our coop is selling beef tallow chips that cost twice as much as regular chips and say 💩 like “omega 3 boards” implying they are better for omega 3 though the beef is not pasture raised (and still has lots of saturated fats lol), “family operated” and “gluten free burgers”. MAHA creep is real.

I don't know how many today are thinking of Dolly Parton in connection with infrastructure, but I am. In 1945 in Sevier Co. TN where she was born, there were 3,078 farms. 197 had running water and 300 had electricity, supplied by the TVA. I'm pondering the role of the New Deal in her rural America.

Reading Sarah Phillips book on conservation & the New Deal and I’m struck by how it was clear then that in the West land “should never have been farmed in the first place” & “grasslands should never have been plowed” but farmers resisted land retirement and hello Colorado River how are you in 2026.

As some of you know I am a big fan of Grant Wood and one of my bucket list items is to teach a class and write a paper on Iowa’s environmental history through his paintings. My favorite work of his is Young Corn, but this is a top five. The Mourner's Bench: “the way of the transgressors is hard”.
Grant Wood
1891-1942
The Mourner's Bench, 1921-1922
Oak, carved and stained
On loan from the Cedar Rapids Community School District
L1.70.3.169
The Mourner's Bench is an example of Grant Wood's great craftsmanship abilities and sense of humor. He carved the doleful and weeping children's heads for the bench while the rest was made with the assistance of his art students from McKinley Junior High School, who also helped him paint and decorate his 5 Turner Alley studio-home.
This "mourner's" bench has the look of a medieval church pew bench.
It was actually created for students to sit on while they "mourned" the deeds that brought them to the principal's office, where the bench was.

Controversial opinion (?): Iowa’s sweet corn - mind you, despite the perception out there the state is NOT a top producer of sweet corn - is way too sweet. Farmers’ market or grocery store, it’s cloyingly sweet and overpowers dishes. esmis.nal.usda.gov/sites/defaul...

One of my major pet peeves about the visuals of Iowa’s agriculture is that they show animals out and about in the farm free range. This is a hog Confined Animal Feeding Operation (CAFO). Chances that corn would have been burned in your car nowadays are about 60%. And you would be paying for it with multiple subsidies (crop insurance, conservation, disaster payments). I’d rather enjoy these instead. Better in so many ways.

Agricultural exceptionalism is rooted in racism and white supremacy, and the reason why this bipartisan baloney still dominates the narrative. "Family farms" can be owned by one individual or a (family owned) corporation. Landowning farmers benefit from subsidies that are capitalized in land values.
