Recently, BABEL members retrieved and redeployed six hydrophones to listen for the calls of North Atlantic right whales! This is part of an ongoing project working to help track when and where right whales are present, giving researchers and managers information to protect this species.

🐳🌐🦤🧪 New data from tagged fin whales in southern New England show low non-song call rates during mid-summer. Calls from males were most frequent during nighttime feeding, indicating context-dependent sound production and implications for acoustic detection. bit.ly/esr01487

We are BABEL, the Bioacoustics and Behavioral Ecology Lab at Syracuse University! We focus on the ecology and evolution of acoustic signaling and animal behavior. Research in the lab spans the fields of behavioral ecology, evolution, bioacoustics, oceanography, and conservation biology.

Congratulations to 2026 Louis M. Herman Research Scholarship recipient 🎉 @whalesmels.bsky.social from @subabel.bsky.social Melanie’s research examines how female acoustic signalling influences pair stability in humpback whales—shedding light on the role of communication in social dynamics.

Caller identification and characterization of individual humpback whale acoustic behaviour | Royal Society Open Science
Acoustic recording tags provide fine-scale data linking acoustic signalling with individual behaviour; however, when an animal is in a group, it is challenging to tease apart calls of conspecifics and identify which individuals produce each call. This, ...
