The Maiden in Scotland was first used to behead someone in 1564. Thomas Scott, a burgess of Dundee, was beheaded in Edinburgh on 3 April 1564. The Maiden remained in use in Scotland until 1716, carrying out around 150 executions.

I often also think of Alfred's brother Jim (pic). He would come to visit his sister - our grannie Flora - who pretty much raised us. There is no memorial to Jim in any village square. He saw years of trench warfare. Sometimes I reflect on the anonymity of those who survived the horror of the war
