"They must have been confused when most of the humans left, over five years ago." From what she could vividly remember, most of the cats from back then were still around, but there were some she hadn't seen yet. Byleth tried to not think too much about them. "It must have been lonely."

Byleth followed after Dimitri. She had to almost-run to keep up with his long gait. She didn't have time to check in her drawers for a spare change of clothes that might fit his slender and tall frame. "Thank you," she repeated, once they were almost there. "I'll gather boiling water. Be careful."

Somewhere during Dimitri's fascinating conversation from his erstwhile potential dinner date, Byleth had slipped out of the knights' hall. She had made her way to the stables, and was brushing a white mare's mane, handing it what seemed to small bits of sugar.

Back then, she had been confused as to why Dimitri hadn't asked Edelgard for a dance. But perhaps their history was more complicated than she could've imagined. "Why dance? Was it something you two liked? Or something she liked to do?"

She had no idea what sort of young boy Dimitri had been. Was he rowdy? Serious? Easygoing? She took in what he said about his childhood, trying to construct an image of a younger Dimitri. Before Duscur and all sorts of terrible things happened. "You did mention that during the ball, I remember."

Tucked away in the mountains of Fodlan's throat there is said to be a spring guarded by hte most fearsome of all creatures. But to him, she was beautiful. More concept art for the mermay project I'm working on. (Byleth with blue hair! At last!) #fe3h #byletheisner

Byleth doodles dump I feel like I draw her differently every time, but I guess the muscle memory will come one day. I actually prefer when I draw her with sharp eyes

"That's concerning." She admitted. "Even mild laxatives can cause unexpected results in some people. Just be careful." She knelt down back with the cats. They had shifted to follow the sunlight that had moved. "Hm... they must be full."

Byleth pet an orange cat, from head to tail. It purred loudly. "If you're ever interested, we just need you to brush up on your swordsmanship and bow work. But... Hm... I can't remember if bow or swordsmanship weighs more in the examination..." She hummed. The orange cat came back for seconds.

"Living in fear, always in danger of death... It's no surprise that during war, scruples can be silenced. That we can do the most cruel acts." Byleth sighed. "That's why we must work to keep the peace. It's the greatest gift we can give to those that remain. And those that will come after us."

And perhaps, somewhere down the line, they would find that the wounds ached less, and the scars slowly faded. But the only way to know, would be to be there to live it. Byleth reached out to cradle Dimitri's face, thumb brushing on the edge of his teary eye. "War brings out the worst of us..."

Byleth nodded. Sometimes, one had to live with the terrible acts they had committed. Find a way to cope with the scars and wounds left, physical or otherwise. That was the only thing they could do: to keep on living. Because a dead person could not redeem themselves. Couldn't learn nor change.

“Because you’re quiet for someone clad in full armor,” she said, standing up from where she observed the cats. They gratefully meowed and slipped between her feet, tail curling around one of her legs as they did. She smiled, then she knelt down to give them a little pat.

Byleth almost had the impulse to ask what he was talking about. But she knew better than that. “Thank you.” She had to take what she could get, after all. “You need to wash your clothes, too. Do you have spares you can change into?”

“Hm… it did warn us of a lack of surveilance on our food supplies. So in a sense, we are now better prepared against sabotage,” she mused. “The question is, what sort of terrible things are you thinking of inflicting on the enemy?”

Professor Byleth Eisner @profbylethe.bsky.social · 31/05/2026
Byleth took a sharp breath. Then, she whispered: “They also prefer food over the sunlight.” She turned to look at Dimitri with gleaming eyes. “Aren’t they cute?”

“It’s unwise to go against the natural order of things. We’d do well to remember that.” And after that, the knight dipped her quill in the ink and began to scratch out the numbers on the ledger. As if nothing had happened.

“Good,” the Pegasus Knight got back up, and straightened her uniform. “It’s for the best. A man of your stature needs to entertain people closer to him in rank. That is how the world works.” She sat back down to her ledgers. But not before saying:

"...It must have been hard," Byleth said, after a brief pause. "You never told me much about those five years. Do you also struggle to remember?"

"Hello, Claude," Byleth turned to look at him, away from the cats. "Good to see you're keeping away from the food stores. Some did not find your little laxative experiment fun."

"Will you help me carry the bedsheets to the laundry if I move?" She asked, crossing her arms.

Byleth nodded, her eyes fixed on the cats. Once the sun started to shift, she gently placed the meal down. Causing the inevitable result of her investigations to bear fruit. Would they turn to the food? Or the sun?

"The fault is mine! It was bold of me to presume Your Highness would entertain the promise made to a lowly viscount's sister!" Groveled the knight. "Your stock is FAR too rich to dally with someone who is just a step above a baron. Compared to you, I'm almost as insignificant as a commoner…"

Once he bowed, the pegasus knight fell to her knees and prostrated herself in front of him, with such hurry and desperation, would almost think she was certain she could end on the business end of Areadbhar if she did not.

“Good to see you’re the type that thinks he can walk out after spending the night in someone else’s bed,” she said. Then stretched her neck. Damn. She stood in front of her door, and crossed her arms as she saw him dress. “Please help me carry my sheets to the laundry. We need to soak them.”

“I’m testing if the cats will be willing to bear leaving their sunny spot for food, or if they will ignore the sunny spot to eat food.” It’s a very serious experiment.

Byleth’s eyes seemed to grow sad when Dimitri brought up Edelgard. They had once been friends, before knowing they were stepsiblings. But now… “What sort of games would you play at?” She asked. “Did you two have many friends back then?”

“Ah.” The beam of sunlight moved. The cats flicked their tails, then got up to make the long and perilous journey to get back on the sunshine. She took out some fishy leftovers from the dining hall and gently left them on the edge between sunlight and darkness. The cats meowed. And ate.

“It’s good to get out of the study now and then, isn’t it?” She said, turning to look up at him as they walked. “I sometimes forget the color of the sky if I’m cooped up for too long.”

The pegasus knight turned to look at the figure that had suddenly addressed her. When she noticed who it was, her eyes grew about as large as teacup saucers. She stood up from her seat and saluted him. Probably expecting some sort of military conversation between them.

The first thing that slipped in through Byleth’s awareness was the sound of footsteps on the rug. The next thing, was the dull ache of her back and neck. “Dimitri?” She mumbled, rubbing her eyes to take note of the situation. “Are you awake?”

Byleth is looking at a colony of cats hanging out by the student dormitories. The cats are lying down, taking in the morning sunlight. However, the ray of golden they’re lying on is starting to shift. So she’s waiting in anticipation for that moment. “…”

“I guess we’ll have to try everything on the menu to be sure.” She said, with her usual cadence. Was that a joke? Was she being serious? With her, it’d be impossible to tell.

“Of course I would stand by you. You stood by me when Jeralt was murdered.” Granted, he did point out later how she had no right to chide him on his recklessness, since she had been reckless in her own quest of revenge. He was right. Revenge had cost her Sothis. “And many other times, too.”

She slowly reached out to brush his hair out of his face with the tips of her fingers. Despite everything, he still had a rather handsome profile.

Byleth let go of the sigh she didn’t know she was holding back. Dimitri had already drifted off to sleep. Too tired to even complain or protest, she imagined. His hair fanned out on the bed, and if it weren’t for the smell and his black eyepath, he’d almost look… angelic?

She gestured at the knight’s hall, where the once-spurned pegasus knight was humming and finishing up some ledgers. Byleth crossed her arms and turned to look at Dimitri.

She wasn’t quite at peace yet. But she wasn’t quite sure if she should stay angry or annoyed at Dimitri. It was hard to put a name on it. There was just… that strange, foreign sensation she couldn’t name. It was like anger and annoyance, but also… sadness? Fear? How strange. “Here it is.”

Professor Byleth Eisner @profbylethe.bsky.social · 10/05/2026
As they made the silent walk towards the knights’ hall, Byleth started to come to a rather embarrassing realization. She… wasn’t angry anymore. What had once been red-hot annoyance, had now mellowed into a discomfort similar to one might feel for an annoying puppy that kept begging for scraps.

“Your hatred ran so deep, it felt more like a force of nature than something internal. In a sense, we were all scared that we had truly lost you to it. That, after your revenge was fulfilled, there would be nothing for you to live for. And that we’d… lose you definitely after that.”

Professor Byleth Eisner @profbylethe.bsky.social · 10/05/2026
Byleth couldn’t think of anything to say right then. Was he right? Would Rodrigue still live if Dimitri had somehow managed to temper his rage and hatred before it was too late? “… I don’t know. But I don’t think you could have stopped yourself from getting carried away, back then.”

“Great,” she said, as placidly as ever, but her hand reached out to take his. “Then… let’s go! What place are you thinking of going to eat? Is it nearby? Is it an inn? Let’s go eat!”

She looked down at the ring he slipped on her finger. It was an elegant silver thing, adored with a brilliant gemstone. She smiled. No matter what would happen from now on, she was happy to share it with him. “… I wish Jeralt were here to see this,” she confessed, turning her eyes to look at him.

“We should also get vegetable stew!” She said, her eyes starting to sparkle at the thought of all that good food. “And, for desert I’d like honey rolls! Oh! Or maybe sweet cream buns?” She shrugged. “Well, maybe we can figure out what we want when we’re there. Your treat?”

Professor Byleth Eisner @profbylethe.bsky.social · 10/05/2026
“I am upset with you,” she stubbornly reminded herself to keep on gnawing on her resentment. Like a hungry dog would chew at a bone. “But I figured that if you’re truly sincere, then there’s no reason to not give you a hand.”
110
Professor Byleth Eisner @profbylethe.bsky.social · 10/05/2026
“Must we go over this again? You’re already collapsing.” She scolded, perhaps a little harsher than she should have given his delicate mental state. “You really think you can even get to Enbarr in this condition?”

Professor Byleth Eisner @profbylethe.bsky.social · 10/05/2026
Byleth had to do a concentrated effort to not react outwardly to the smell. Fortunately, her relatively placid face probably managed to not betray her shock. She was going to dunk him in soap and warm water next chance she got. And she would scrub him with a sponge until his skin turned pink.
