I haven’t looked into this for years. The last time I tried the records were still sealed. My father thinks he had something to do with the capture of Himler in May ‘45, and/or answered directly to De Gaulle, but 🤷‍♂️. All we know is he was a British spy that worked closely with the French resistance.

I’m looking forward to the De Gaulle film, and it was getting rave reviews in France while we were there this summer. A small humble brag: my grandfather was given a Croix de Guerre by De Gaulle for his work with French secret services during WWII. He was then awarded the Légion D’Honneur in 1982.

A letter in The Times in defence of the humanities at Exeter. Exeter has a degree of social capital that other institutions do not, but also the scandal here is we’re not in deficit and have loadsa cash. So if this debate can compel a rethink on of the funding model for HE, I’ll be delighted

#defendexeteruni Lib Dem’s stepping up. Where’s the Labour Party?
Dear Lisa Roberts,
We are writing to you on behalf of Exeter Liberal Democrats,
You will no doubt be aware that the Royal Devon University Healthcare NHS Foundation has recently announced job losses, and with the news last week of proposed cuts at the University being announced it is a serious concern that two key employers within Exeter are looking to lose roles.
Many of our resident's from across the city work or study at the University and as you would expect the announcement from the University last week has resulted in many concerned emails to us on the impact that this news will have on both the staff and students at the University.
The fact that the cuts seem to disproportionally affects the Humanities, Arts and Social Sciences is alarming.
Exeter is known for its vibrant culture, we are one of very few UNESCO Cities of Literature and we have inspired writers throughout history, we have a rich and diverse history from Romans to Saxons, Vikings, Normans and Witchcraft, we have wonderful heritage sites - the roman walls, the cathedral, the quay, the castle and the underground tunnels.
The University is very much embedded as part of that culture, it offers world class research and attracts diverse and fantastically talented staff, and it offers an exciting and eclectic range of courses.
The staff and academics are the heart of the University and have been integral to many of the success stories that the University has been proud to list and Exeter residents benefit greatly from having access to these resources, academics from the University frequently host lectures at the Library, the Phoenix and other cultural venues across the city.
We have contacted lan Sollum the Liberal Democrat MP for St Neots and Mid Cambridgeshire and spokesperson for Universities and Skills to ask that he raises these concerns in Parliament on behalf of our residents.
We encourage you to listen to staff and students during the consultation period [truncated]

But my favourite bits are the discussions of anarchism and popular culture. I think we all forget how deep anarchist tropes, themes and motifs run in modern pop culture, and how globalised that has been since the 1860s: The Matrix to The Dead Kennedys, surrealism to cubism, poetry, plays, literature

Thundercat! OMFG the guy and the band are fucking talented. First 15 was just epic. And his demographic is a long way from my recent dad gigs, even though it’s all a bit ‘90s retro, with twiddly-dees. #thundercat #bristolbeacon got a bit TOTP at the end too… still fucking amazing

Just finished day one of recording the audiobook version of my Very Short Introduction to anarchism. Odd experience that went well (🤞🏻). One stupidly long sentence, one impossible-to-pronounce name, and multiple stop-starts, but a good way to better my writing style global.oup.com/academic/pro...

On my way home after a lovely couple of days in Magdeburg. History looms large here. The oldest gothic cathedral In Germany was damaged when the Brits flattened the city in WWII. A short stroll reveals commemoration everywhere.

Congratulations to @oskarnarcho.bsky.social who successfully defended his PhD today at the Otto Von Guericke University, Magdeburg. Delighted to have co-supervised this thesis by publication on anarchist peace facilitation.
Apparently it’s a Swedish tradition to nail your thesis to a door (sounds Lutheran to me). This is a miniature replica of thatJonas with some ironic presents

Looking for a good read for 2026? Try The Book of Trespass by Nick Hayes (2020). Starts with the Kinder Scout trespass and just gets better and better. An emotive eye opener and a blistering critique of English capitalism.

True. But Leeson is a liberal/an-cap, and while I don’t follow him, he might be able to persuade the ones the left can’t reach. Also this:

Results showing a Labour hold in the South West mayoral election, with 25% of the vote share. Reform came second with 22%, and the Greens came third with 20%. Thankfully the Russian shill Arron Banks couldn’t fix this election.
