This sounds like a win, but I'm a bit worried. Desk rejects temporarily relieves the reviewers of this cycle of N papers, but those same papers will get resubmitted into the next cycle and venue. Effectively the burden is being shifted onto the next conferences, encouraging irresponsible reviews.

(Reading too much into just one paper from my batch of reviews but...) It seems that many other reviewers are finally pushing back on low hanging fruit chasing papers. These would have been easy accepts last year (against my reject opinion).

conferences are really awesome to attend, but the format feels outdated and unjustified at current scales. I feel the overwhelming positive reactions I see with COLM, a smaller and leaner conference with more focused interests, supports this idea.

I'm not sure why this isn't a bigger news story than it is right now outside of the few researchers I follow. Even if it was for a far less controversial topic, this is some straight up insidious stuff to sneak propaganda into the entire userbase of your "free speech" platform.

Have real researchers emphasized the meaningless "how many r's in strawberry" problems too much? The general public genuinely believes this to be indicative of intelligence or usefulness.
