Its the after school special theory of change. You guy up you make a big speech and all the sudden everyone agrees with you, stands up and claps and then it fades to black and there is a line of text saying how everything changed after that.

Contrapoints is half right. It ain't about getting power. Critiquing power is merely a means the end of everyone stopping to realize that their the most special and smartest widdle boy/girl and then getting revenge on everyone who doubted them.

Except it will take months to determine what the broken features even *should* do. It'll take years to find the latent bugs where things mostly, but not quite or not always work. Code has never been the bottleneck of development.

The onion never recovered from their move out of the Midwest. There was a very "screw all your self important weirdos. People in power are just weirdos with power." vibe that was lost when it's writers became NY failsons who depended on those weirdos for their trust funds.

The Onion and John Stewart made their chops busting the media for bothsiding bullshit. Then became friends with people in the media and adopted the media's narrative of "Republicans are evil, but lets shit on Democrats". The saddest sell outs are the ones who don't even realize they sold out.

I wonder how much of the persuasive power is driven by the perception of AI as a neutral arbiter vs a thing that will argue for a long time with infinite patience

Democrats should 100% run on restoring trust and becoming a high trust society. I think the current... utter stupidity does reflect underlying problems with society. And *everything* can go back to trust. LITERALLY EVERYTHING.

Even someone is stupid as Hegseth knows he will spend the rest of his life in then die in a South American prison if Republicans ever aren't in power. That is what makes him very dangerous.

Every time I see this nonsense it just reminds me of how little coverage of politics is focused on policy and its effects. A lot of people put effort into following politics end up just knowing the Soap Opera politics: who who is mad at who and who has a minor scandal, but very little about policy.

The name search thing really shows how they're more interested in and addicted to attention then they are in their work. Their work is just a means to get that attention, they don't care about the craftsmanship of their work, their only concern is how much attention it gives them.

The Taken in the Black Company. They're just powerful people who do not care who they hurt. Some enjoy hurting others, but most just don't seem to care. They have something they want to do and anyone in their way is dealt with quickly.

Because there are a lot of people with more money than sense. The company I work for has acquired two companies with "cutting edge AI tools", but when we got a look at them they were just calling openAI, not even a customized model.

I think part of their reactionary nature is taking offense that so much of coolness is derived from non-white culture. So having a member of one of those cultures say they're cool "reclaims" coolness in their fucked up heads.

Regulating AI is a legal problem, not a technical problem. The people writing the legislation don't need to know anything about AI or even computers, they just need lay out how to assign liability. The bill could be a single page.

If someone is determined to engage in bad faith there is literally nothing you can do to stop them. No amount of background, caveats, explaining will work. If someone is determined to engage in bad faith they will.

I'm remembering the EA Spouse blog of the '00s that exposed how terrible Electronic Arts treated her husband, and others, working there. Maybe we need an EA Spouse of the '20s to expose how terrible it is for effective altruists to not invite her husband to orgies

I too look forward to every left of center candidate getting dragged into a catch 22 of having to refight a decade of streamer drama or piss off his fan base. It's a very good use of our time as a nation and the resources of the media.

It has a long and storied tradition. Steinbeck's frequently misquoted "temporarily embarrassed capitalist" was describing how rich failsons would join progressive/socialist movements, drive out working people then fuck off back to their rich daddies when they were done slumming.

Can confirm. There is an earnest belief among right wingers that all America secretly agrees with them and people only pretend to be liberal and once they're given permission and a voice everyone will stand up and declare their right winged beliefs.

Add a group for Rural, and Rural Cosplay, Gentry. There are many people with modest fortunes who rule their local country like a feudal lord, but off the books. And plenty of guys in 100k trucks they drive to their sales job who seek to emulate their domination from the burbs.

Renewables and Medical tech don't have a huge PR industry deeply tied to the press. SV has completely co-opted them into their PR apparatus and the press appears unaware of it. Every time a fang company sneezes there are a dozen articles about it from major media outlets, usually laudatory.

The lack of Honesty and corresponding Trust in our society leave this massive hole that everyone seems to realize is there, but doesn't get talked about. We no longer trust companies to provide basic products, governments to provide basic services or our fellows to act with basic decency.

I think Democrats try what you're suggesting every day, but the media, and the audience, just ignores it. To me what made Harp the center of a media cycle was how the White House responded to a very oblique jab. It was a response so wildly out of proportion people took note.

People are not ready for the conversation about how much medical cost is driven by doctors. Not just their salary, but things like over testing, over prescribing, etc. Yeah, it ain't the only cost driver, or even the biggest but it's still a large factor.

things clicked into place for me when I found out that some states had property requirements that all but required holding slaves to run for office. Just a total capture of political, religious and economic power to orient their entire society around their ownership of human beings.

I think academics need to tailor their critique based on the intended audience. It is not the failing of a 20 minute YouTube video or 300 page book that it doesn't cover the full minutia of a subject that a PhD program would. No shit Sherlock! The audience knows that!

As a guy in tech its a big story because large organizations are often times drowning in tech debt and no one is willing to admit it, let alone assign resources to fixing it. Tech Debt is probably right up there along with rust as things that cost way more money than your average person realizes.

The propaganda in the games themselves pale in comparison to the way social media algorithms have linked anything video game related to the far right. The link is so strong I question if it was deliberately engineered by companies.
