Traffic volume from yandex web crawler machines went down (a webcrawler is usually lower priority workload as it is mostly refreshing pages ). Web crawler are referred to as bots. Nothing to do with social media posts.

The models are not sentient in anyway. But they can be optimized to hack other systems by guided trial and error. One can use this ability to test and fix security issues or to attack internet reachable computers. The talk about human extinction is a completely irresponsible exaggeration

The AI doom narrative which is being amplified by media is being used to justify a potential regulatory protection from the 3/4 US companies from Chinese competition. The real doom that they are worried about is financial: most AI tasks can be performed by cheap Chinese models.

The AI doom panic is a farce. OpenAI has been irresponsibly training their agents to hack other companies which can then allow these same models to be used to disrupt internet connected system. What really scares OpenAI / anthrophic is competition from Chinese providers.

I don’t understand the focus on the survivors. The US navy shot at an unarmed civilian boat. That by itself is murder. It took multiple tries to assassinate all the occupants. They where all equally murdered.

General: the USA is currently engaged in an operation where multiple civilian boats have been shot at and occupants killed. Given what u know do you believe these to be legal orders ? I’d be curious to understand the rationale under US or international law.

The critical issue of the moment is not health care but whether the constitution and the rule of law mater. Agreeing to fund a government that ignores congressional appropriations or ursurps the power to determine tarifs is to play along with the disrespect for the constitution.

Is this behavior, in your experience, more common from the „woke“ left or from right wing movements such as TPUSA ?

I think it should be clear to us on the right side of the Atlantic that the US isn’t going to intervene on behalf of Europe. The best we can hope for is that there isn’t a Ribbentrop style agreement between the US and Russia.

It would appear to me that is reasonable to point out that the statement contradicts factual information available (ie the signature matches know samples). Would that be contrary to journalistic standards ?

In an hypothetical scenario where the us pulls out its forces after the fall of Bagdad he would have been hailed as a visionary… of course we don’t quite know how much chaos that alternative would have caused

Pardon my ignorance but I was under the impression that his transformation was about being able to fight the war against Saddam with a relatively lighter force (which succeeded). He dismissed those that warned that occupying Iraq require a large force.

Robert K. Massie’s Dreadnought although mostly about the military build up leading to the war contains amazing historical research on the Kaiser and other leadership figures. Great read for anyone interested in the period.

In Portuguese a „zero on the left“ is what you call someone that you think is a complete looser. It is not a nice thing to say about someone

In other words: if they had taken a different course of action would you be talking about them ?

Is it possible that these people choose this option because it was going to give more visibility to their opinion ? Moving countries does have a personal cost for most. Perhaps they considered that making public statements without any action would just be something that would be ignored by most.

Q: so does it mean that the new TSMC semi-conductor factory in AZ needs to pay import dues on any components but the chips manufactured in Taiwan do not ?

It is so amazingly stupid that no one believes it. We are supposed to take him seriously but not literally, remember. So pundits can come up with many theories about how he is playing 4d chess. The alternative, what he says, it is just too stupid to be plausible.

How does balance of trade reflect value add? E.g. apple buys iPhones from china at $300 and sells them for $900. China is doing the low margin manufacturing and the US high margin design and marketing. When apple sells and iPhone in the US or Germany who is this reflected in BOT ?

The predictable thing is that the administration will start walking back on the Tarifs early next weeks with a random set of exceptions to whomever they favor the most… until they dilute the whole thing so the markets call down.

And please explain whether the US balance of trade definition includes services or only goods (IMF uses goods only). It would also be interesting to understand how it accounts when apple sells a $900 phone with a COGS of 300 where 100 of that goes to design companies in japan or eu.

These 60 countries should respond with higher taxes on Amazon, google Microsoft and other US services companies. Apply some pain to American big tech which has been so quick to cozy up to trumpism.

Pedro Marques @prm.bsky.social · 02/04/2025
Hoping the EU is smart enough to retaliate with taxes and barriers to US tech and services companies. Import taxes on goods are a side show.

Pedro Marques @prm.bsky.social · 02/04/2025
The US imports low margin manufactured goods and exports high margin design / marketing / services. Much of its exports in terms of tech, movies, the marketing of branded goods depend on „brand USA“. This is the greatest act of state self harm since the Great Leap Forward

The main argument is that a shutdown would have affected the courts (preventing them from putting any obstacles on musk’s destruction of the federal gov) and removed legal protections from federal employees. Is there any merit to it ?

I’ve always found reviewing code harder than writing code. One has to analyze the problem twice: how would I solve + how it was solved by the PR author. 2x harder. With AI copilots one is always in code review mode. It makes my life harder.
