The inability of really very many cities to build public transport that doesn’t dump you miles from the terminal is quite the mystery

This is everything in one video: the bananas conspiracy theories from living inside a bubble, being unable to contain the smarmy smugness when he thinks he’s got him snared in the trap he has deployed, the inability to handle being told he is wrong, by a woman, and the embarrassment of all of it.

I do 90 percent of the meal planning, shopping, cooking, and kitchen inventory management in our home, and what enrages me about this post is that its contention is probably true. But also I don’t need AI to do it. My brain and a Reminders shopping list works fine

A thing that’s under appreciated about Rahm is how frequently he communicates using impenetrable metaphor.

It’s been a long time now since sportscenter was good. What I really miss though is my Sports Illustrated that would arrive in the mail every week when I was a kid, which I would read cover-to-cover

It’s almost as if people are making decisions based on the quality of the candidate’s message over ideological purity

Maybe it’s that he figured if he did this he’d get a shitload of attention. Really, it could be that dumb. People always want to ascribe grand strategies and chess moves and the like. Maybe he’s bored up in the woods in Maine and figured he’d make things more interesting

Fully cognizant that the “no one ever talks about this” trope is the dumbest trope, no one ever talks about how there is a less than zero incentive for non-citizens to try to vote.

I find this funny because it jogged my memories of how Ahmed Chalabi ran around Washington all through the 90s peddling “intel” about Iraqi wmds, but got no serious takers until Bush was looking for reasons to go after Saddam. This then led me to recall the Scooter Libby Judith Miller shenanigans

I work in a fairly niche field that’s a bit of a dark art, and where good actionable info can be hard to come by. As it regards LLMs, what I have learned is they will consistently deliver terrible information cloaked in a tone of authority. So yeah maybe don’t bet your life on it

I have no idea who is right but this seems both qualitatively and quantitatively different than 15 million people turning on the radio at the appointed time each day.

Where I’m at right now is that it’s impossible to overstate the communist agit prop Cold War trauma of growing up during Reagan

No argument from me. Everyone on the left needs to get on the compromise train. Calling people communists is no less unproductive

Too many DSA-inclined people prefer to take their toys and go home when they don’t get what they want rather than do the hard work of finding compromise under a big Democratic tent. This is a particular kind of selfishness and narcissism, frequently i my experience borne of privilege

This reminds me of my point about Hillary Clinton, which is that I suspect she is much further to the left than her policy positions, which is ironic

When I was a producer for CNN in DC in the 90s, I went to one correspondent’s dinner. I found the whole thing deeply uncomfortable, and never went again. But if I was there now (which is a helluva hypothetical), I think I might want to go because I would be interested in witnessing all the weird

If you listen to an interview with someone like, say, Marc Andreesen, or other elite technologists, you learn that no one has more disdain and open contempt towards people who actually do stuff.

I think Tom Nichols is a good writer, an interesting thinker in his areas of expertise, and quite skilled at attracting attention, who only became a national journalist like three years ago.

Clearly, there have been opportunists who have acquired publications to repurpose for ideological goals! I think the larger story is the shift from a knowledge-based information ecosystem to an attention-based one, and I agree it doesn’t have a damn thing to do with decadence or laziness

I’ll add: not only were papers bleeding out, they now had to build out and support all this digital infrastructure that’s just part of our lives now.

I’m forgetting. It wasn’t any one thing, it was all the things. So reducing the cause of this to blaming newspapers for raising subscription rates doesn’t even come close to adequately considering a 30+ year trajectory of events

To attract readers. They were forced to charge more, and engaged in corporate consolidation. People weren’t willing, as you illustrated, to pay for it, so newspapers no longer had the money to embark on the kind of local enterprise reporting that speaks truth to power. And I’m sure there’s stuff

Sites that they made free to access. This was a colossal mistake, I believe. The ascendance of cable news, particularly Fox News happened. Social media didn’t even show up until the mid 2000s. So it was kind of a cascade over like 20 years. Local papers tried to adjust by beefing up on features

It wasn’t one thing. I finished my journalism degree in 1992, when every metro still had a vibrant paper, and even then, pre-internet, our professors were warning us about shrinking opportunities and a very tough job market. Then Craigslist. Then Google. Then every newspaper launched internet
