When Aron Beale first meets Odelia in The Prince of Memphis, “Chain of Fools” is in the air — an admonition, perhaps, about their ensuing romance and Aron's plan to claim his birthright. @dreamfieldpress.bsky.social @lissawarren.bsky.social #arethafranklin #chainoffools #princeofmemphis

Whitney Houston's mother, Cissy Houston, anchored the Sweet Inspirations, and the group soon became the bedrock sound for Elvis's records and live performances from 1969-77. “Chain of Fools” won a Grammy Award for Best Female R&B Vocal Performance and was later awarded a Grammy Hall of Fame Award.

The song was originally written by Don Covay for Otis Redding. After listening to the demo, Atlantic Records producer Jerry Wexler gave the song to Franklin, showcasing her gospel/soul phrasing, along with backup vocals by the Sweet Inspirations and Aretha's sisters.

Now at the age of 53, he’s forced to confront his past and the surreal predicament of an absent father who is endlessly present. He decides to write a memoir to reveal his lineage, a task that carries him into the dark heart of American pop culture — Elvis’s estate and religious cults be damned.

In The Prince of Memphis, Aron Beale is the unacknowledged son of Elvis Presley and a Black mother, Clara Mae Beale. Despite his outcast state, Aron signs a contract with Luna Records in Detroit and records “Midnight Candy,” which hits big in the ‘70s and makes Aron a one-hit wonder.

In The Prince of Memphis, Aron Beale’s mentor, Moses Blake, puts the record on when Aron visits Moses at WAAX. It comes at a turning point for Aron, when his own story has stalled before kicking into high gear.

You can’t help but nod your head to the song’s slap guitar, rapid-fire rhythm, and Elvis's classic vocal stylings for the rest of the tune.

Presley’s version from 1954 adds energy and rhythmic phrasing to the blues classic. The song begins as an ambling ballad, but an interlude by Presley kicks the song into high gear: “Hold it, fellas! That don't MOVE me! Let's get real, real gone for a change.”

Sledge's timeless soul gave the tune substantial staying power. Its popularity surged in the late 1980s when it was featured in a Gap commercial.

In The Prince of Memphis, Odelia takes Aron to the Rocket 88 Bowling Alley and plays the song on a vintage jukebox — a scene where Sledge's soulful voice underscores the emotional roller coaster of their conversation.

“When a Man Loves a Woman” became a #1 hit for Percy Sledge in 1966, with the initial session completed at FAME Studios in Muscle Shoals, Alabama. Written by Calvin Lewis and Andrew Wright, the song as recorded by Percy Sledge is ranked at #53 in Rolling Stone's "500 Greatest Songs of All Time."

Her voice is filled with longing and a touch of heartbreak—a superb example of country soul. Willie Nelson wrote the song in 1958. Despite the fact that Patsy at first didn’t care much for the tune, her interpretation became an instant classic and started Willie on the road that he still travels.

“Crazy” as recorded by Patsy Cline in 1961 still sounds contemporary, with the crew at Bradley’s Studio B keeping the arrangement spare and the Jordanaires, who sang always with Elvis, providing a rich foundation for Patsy’s vocal.

“Baby Let’s Play House” is also the title of Chapter 3 in The Prince of Memphis, where early in the novel we see something of Aron and Odelia’s domestic life.

The opening and closing bars of “Baby Let’s Play House” still come off as original, offering signature moves that would soon define the Presley style.

When Elvis showed up at Sun and recorded the song, he shifted gears in terms of Parker’s blues shuffle, upping the tempo and amplifying the song’s forward momentum—creating a fresh brew of blues and country that DJs started calling rockabilly.
