We stayed at Bascom Lodge at the summit of Mount Greylock before heading home. A storm was expected overnight so I took advantage of the little time I had that night to take pictures. #appalachiantrail #mountains #landscaprphotography #vistas

This dark purple fungus has a velvety convex cap with underside gills. The stem is the same shade of purple. It is growing in the ground in leaf debris. This is a mostly deciduous young forest.

Behind the scenes, a complex assessment balancing caution and compassion... When you run into homelessness on the trail, there are layers of calculations happening. On this evening we had valid concerns, but also evidence and reason to let those concerns pass. #backpacking #hiking

An orange sun glows through the trees. We tented near the shelter, three women, while a homeless man with his backpack and carrying 2 duffel bags took up residents in the shelter. I discreetly took a video and shared it with (a different set of)section hiking buddies. One was able to identify the man has having been on trail for several years. If he was harming others, e would be known. Still reason enough to be cautious.

This tan mushroom with a smooth cap and thick stipe is growing on a decaying stump. It sits at an elevated position, almost throne-like.
