“Guidance matters, but adaptation decisions are made in specific settings with specific constraints. That is why we also work directly with those adapting programmes, which is where much of our own learning comes from.” - Erin Stern, Senior Associate, Prevention Collaborative.

One evaluation of the Indashyikirwa couples' curriculum found a 55% reduction in women's odds of experiencing physical and sexual IPV. An adapted version found that women were experiencing more IPV, not less. The Prevention Triad helps us understand why: prevent.short.gy/IzCrlF

A curriculum that works in one environment will not automatically translate to another; context, social norms, facilitator quality, and available services all shape what adaptation requires. 📖https://prevent.short.gy/t6M9aH  #AdaptationForPrevention

Adapting a curriculum's content is only half the work. The implementation elements- the frequency, location of sessions, and how participants are recruited shape programme impact just as much as what is in the curriculum itself.  📖: prevent.short.gy/t6M9aH  #AdaptationForPrevention

So, how do you shift a norm? It requires: — Critical reflection on why the norm exists  — Implement new alternatives, not just critique  — Drive community-wide diffusion, not just individual change  — Policy and structural shifts alongside community work #ViolencePrevention #AspirationalMessagin

But norms can change; consider how quickly communication norms shifted when email and social media arrived. Norms that felt fixed for decades shifted
100
Prevention Collaborative @prevention-collaborative.org · 03/08/2026
Here is the thing about norms: They are learned.  From infancy, we absorb the rules of our culture. Those rules shape stereotypes, reinforce bias, and determine who holds power and who doesn't.

Prevention Collaborative @prevention-collaborative.org · 03/08/2026
Social norms are the unwritten rules that tell us how to behave, what is acceptable, expected, or normal in a community. Think: who sits at the head of the table? Who apologises first? Who is expected to stay silent?
