The way I manage it is by having some kind of subtle or even overt "out." I think one time I even just had a "the characters are inexplicably all okay and cuddling" bit at the end. I might not even post such things publicly, since they're mostly a "for me" thing.

Action Ninja games usually have a solution, or a narrow set of solutions. The obstacle is finding the solution(s) or enacting them. Evil Jester games hand you a problem and expect you to come up with a solution yourself. There's usually no "intended" way to play.

Hmm. I think the *design intent* is Action Ninja. It fits the themes of the game a lot better I think. But like with Deathtrap Dungeon it's not a perfect fit. It's an Action Ninja with a jester's hat.

For clarification: Action Ninjas engage you in such a way that you must challenge them in a fair way, on their own terms. Evil Jesters will dunk on you if you try that. You need to exploit every advantage you can get. There's no such thing as a fair fight. Or something like that? Hmm.

Caves of Qud is very firmly Evil Jester. Celeste is very firmly Action Ninja. Deathtrap Dungeon is closer to the center, but leans more Evil Jester. Despite soulslikes being known for Action Ninja, I think quite a lot of them are close to Evil Jester.

My favourite bit is how improving said powers cost fewer points per level than improving executive function. Conjuring aspects of your iconography (weapons, clothes, tools, resources, etc.) costs the same amount of points as conjuring the willpower to keep your focus and attention on something.
