It is his best performance. His final confrontation with Cruise makes that entire movie for me.

Agreed. TOOTSIE is an all-time comedy classic, and my favorite movie he ever directed by a country mile, but his acting work in the likes of EYES WIDE SHUT and MICHAEL CLAYTON was unmatched.

I’m generally not a big horror fan, with all due respect to everyone else on the planet. So I tend to just keep my Octobers as is.

Couldn’t recommend it enough. One of the very best crime films of the ‘90s, and one of Soderbergh’s finest movies. And it’s 90 minutes. 😈

Novak and Kelly are probably the most iconic of the Hitchcock blondes, but Saint was far and away the best actress of all of them. She fought tooth-and-nail her whole career to shed herself of that image, and her many great character roles and cameos are proof in the pudding. I’m a lifelong fan.

While not a great film by any means, the Liz Taylor-Dick Burton vehicle THE SANDPIPER is elevated a lot from Eva Marie Saint’s stellar performance as Burton’s wife; dismayed at his infatuation with Taylor and her free spirit. A fascinating film thinly veiling the Sexual Revolution in its beginnings.
Eva Marie Saint and Richard Burton.

Not saying this to sound like a hipster, but longtime mutuals know how important in my film development seeing NORTH BY NORTHWEST as a kid was. Eva was no small part as to why, who was also tremendous in classics such as ON THE WATERFRONT, GRAND PRIX and CAROL FOR ANOTHER CHRISTMAS. Rest in Peace.

Terrific movie though! P.S. other than this movie, my favorite thing Gregory Hines ever did was his duet with Luther Vandross. 🤧 Talk about a banger!

I still need to see BACKDRAFT and yes, that theme is so memorable. I miss when Zimmer scores didn’t all sound the same, he’s definitely been coasting.

I think part of it for me is that film noir is my favorite genre, and I wish we had more of it. It’s a beloved genre, but far more niche than horror or action.

Preston @prestomit.bsky.social · 02/10/2026
😂 I won’t argue with that. Other than Goodfellas, there’s not a single 1990 movie I’ve seen more times. Verhoeven kilt it. Not killed, he kilt.

I’d say either made in, financed in or strongly introduced by the Brits. For example, THE THIRD MAN is technically an American co-production since David O. Selznick’s name is all over it… but it couldn’t be more British in terms of its humor, its atmosphere and its cultural power.
