The only structural fix is to change who pays. When the user is the customer, incentives align: no ads, no tracking, no spam, no reason to starve the sources you cite, and the user gets the best possible service. We pay for coffee, and newspapers, and search/information is arguably more important.

One small reframe: Google isn't betraying a public mission, it never had one. Advertisers were always the customer. Users and publishers were inventory. AI just lets it cut out the last intermediary, the open web itself.

Sharp piece by @drewmagary.bsky.social. The line that will stick with me - "I naively assumed Google still found tremendous financial value in the sharing of information." That single sentence explains twenty years of slow decay. www.sfgate.com/tech/article...

We just published a new blog post on the state of search and the critical need for open index access. The dawn of a healthier, user-centric web is possible, but it requires structural change. blog.kagi.com/waiting-dawn...

My kids came with an idea for this one. We quickly built a prototype and few months later happy to announce we are launching Slop Detective game today! The purpose is to educate kids about AI slop and teach them how to fact check. Thanks to Nat, Nicole, Nenad, Ratik and Kevin for making this happen

Kagi is now 60,000 members and 7,000 families strong. That's 1M daily searches from our small rebel alliance, building a web that serves people, not advertisers. Every search strikes back at surveillance capitalism. Thank you for joining the rebellion.

My apologies for the survey that went out to all customers - we don't do this normally. We meant well - we need data to improve the product. And thank you if you responded. Also I understand if it annoyed you. We get it - you pay for Kagi to avoid this kind of thing. Lesson learned.

Terms will follow "ordinary commercial practices": The court indicates that the agreements should align with standard industry practices and that it does not want to interfere with ordinary business arrangements. pg 177, 180

Pricing will not be at "marginal cost": The court explicitly rejects the plaintiffs' proposal to force Google to offer syndication at its marginal cost. It reasons that such pricing would destroy the commercial market for search syndication and harm other competitors like Microsoft and Brave. pg 175
