Big #pumpkins at my neighborhood grocery store tonight, but… Do you need a chainsaw to make #pumpkin pies with them? Can you run the shells down your disposal after using the good part? Isn't it a little early for #Halloween?

Backyard flower that I haven't managed to kill in 13 years of black thumbery
Pinkish flower not yet fully open. Maybe a hollyhock? I'm no botanist!

I was working at home in Boston on the morning of 9/11, writing a magazine article. TV and radio off. Computer alerts turned off. Silence. I didn't know for hours we'd been attacked. I didn't know for days that two former colleagues were on that first plane that crashed into the World Trade Center.

It's a good day for a walk in Huskerland. Breezy and not too hot.

I just saw an old man at Walgreens wearing a T shirt from the Beatles 1965 US tour. Both the T shirt and the old man looked genuine.

After I read Charlotte's Web yesterday, I discovered that its author, E B White, is the same E B White who co-wrote The Elements of Style, a classic guide to good writing used as a reference by countless publications, including a magazine where I was the editor back in the 1980s.

I've just read Charlotte's Web for the first time. It wasn't in my grade school library where I might have found it and I'm imagining the school librarian in my small Texas hometown in the 1950s: "A spider and a pig? Only a sicko would want to read something like that!"

One of the greatest disappointments of old age is that people think you're senile when you're really just hard of hearing.

One of many sunflowers growing at the daycare center. Good for the toddlers who spend their days there. Good for pedestrians like me passing by.

I've joyfully eaten countless enchiladas ever since 1964. But only in Nebraska have I seen, heard of, or had the unfortunate displeasure of eating soggy enchiladas made with flour tortillas.

For someone like me, now 80, this article has special meaning, but it can also be inspiring to someone of any age who cares about quality of life and living. Stewart Brand Is Facing His Final Years in a Home That Embodies the Ethos of His Whole Earth Catalog - WIRED

Don’t know who wrote this — it was posted on Instagram by “Warpaint Journal” in April 2025 — but it’s making the rounds today and is pretty great. I dream of this too ❤️
Most people don't dream of being fancy-rich.
I dream of being rich enough to say, "Treat's on me," without thinking twice. Rich enough to have a home that feels like a hug, a fridge stocked like a five-year-old with adult money, and a tray of chocolates waiting for someone to grab. Rich enough to quietly help a friend before they even have to ask. To send a care package when someone's too tired to reach out. To buy all the pencils from a kid on the street so they can go home early. For me, the real money dream isn't about luxury - it's about having enough to give, enough to comfort, enough to turn ordinary moments into something extraordinary.

Female Bullock’s oriole (?) in my crabapple tree. #birds
Maybe someone can help ID? It’s a little east of Bullock’s territory, but doesn’t look like other orioles here in mid Nebraska. She was with a male, but I didn’t get a good look or a photo.

My Apple Watch is congratulating me for turning in early last night and getting a good night's sleep. 😇 What my Apple Watch doesn't know is that I never went to bed. I just fell asleep in my recliner. 💤

The edge of what used to be prairie 150 or so years ago, but now is only the edge of Kearney, Nebraska. I wish I could have seen the prairie as a sea of grass stretching as far as the eye could see.

A winter day in Nebraska. Every now and then the gods smile on us.
75° in February in Nebraska. (Translation: Get outside! Now!)

The trees are bare, but the sky is blue, the clouds are gauzy white, and the wind is soft and gentle.

I gave my smart TV a brain transplant today. Bypassed the Google TV firmware and replaced it with an Apple TV 4K streamer. Got rid of all the Google ads.

This fine Canada goose and hundreds of others are hanging out at Cottonmill Pond. We would gladly welcome other Canadians to Nebraska, but our president keeps insulting and threatening them.

Walking this afternoon on Oldfather Prairie near Kearney, Nebraska
Oldfather is a small remnant prairie that still exists only because it’s too rugged to plow or build on.
