The vibe is definitively more 70's, and even if some characters are almost the same (E,F,H,I,M,N,T,V,X,Y and Z) they are a bit smaller and you get the welcome addition of . (yeah a dot), £ and $.

Yeah, that's why I say "with modifications" ! No idea if it was that common or that effective as a weapon but I bet seeing a crowd of guys with them would be intimidating (& reassuring if not effective for the owners). To be honest I bet axes, flail and bill-hooks where more common and practical.
