From a 1976 GAO report on unionization in the US armed forces:
DEFENSE MANPOWER COMMISSION
In a report issued in April 1976 to the President and the Congress, the Defense Manpower Commission discussed the possibility of unionization of the U.S. Armed Forces. The Commission noter,
"that many members of the active forces feel dismayed and disillusioned because of what they perceive to be either neglect, disinterest or a breach of faith on the part of their Government * * * [ and that | the attitudes of the members of the Armed Forces in this regard are shaped primarily by their perceptions of the attitude toward them of the President, the Congress and the Secretary of Defense."
Primarily because of this and its conviction that unionization would involve unacceptable conseguences, the Commission expressed extreme concern about the possibility of military unionization; a possibility which the Commission believed
"must be faced squarely and appropriate actions to deal with the possibility must be undertaken now." In this respect, the Commission recommended that the Secretary of Defense publish a regulation that would prohibit all officers, warrant officers, or noncommissioned officers from joining a union and publish a directive that prohibits commanders from recognizing or bargaining with a union.

Morning run to visit Samuel Gompers “What does labor want? We want more schoolhouses and less jails; more books and less arsenals; more learning and less vice; more leisure and less greed; more justice and less revenge; in fact, more of the opportunities to cultivate our better natures…”

Happy Labor Day weekend. Nothing we have was not earned by the blood and sweat of those who have gone before. Enjoy a 40 hour work week? Thank a union. Enjoy PTO? Thank a union. Enjoy safety standards? Thank a union. Enjoy weekends off? Thank a union. Organizing wins. Period.

Holy shit, Mother Jones could absolutely eviscerate men. Referring to Republican Gov William Glasscock as “Crystal Peter” for “modesty’s sake” Shogan, Battle of Blair Mountain, 39

For the Paint Creek-Cabin Creek strike, she drew on her full range of demagogic talents. In August of I912, addressing hundreds of miners at a Sunday afternoon rally in front of the State Capitol, she demanded that the governor, Republican William Glasscock (whom she referred to for "modesty's sake" as "Crystal Peter"), drive the mine guards from the state.

Happy 100th birthday to Cpl Melvin Kaminsky aka Mel Brooks - the Mensch of Mensches When speaking of his service with the 78th Infantry Division in WWII, he reportedly said, “I was a combat engineer. Isn’t that ridiculous? The two things I hate most in the world are combat and engineering.”

kids, if you ever have imposter syndrome, never forget that Kissinger didn’t make basic connections about the interaction of domestic and foreign policy until he was a cabinet member, so you’re doing just fine
As a young academic, Henry Kissinger belleved that us foreign policy was a separate domain from domestic affairs. During his service as national security advisor and secretary of state in the Nixon and Ford administrations, however, he came to understand the significant influence that domestic politics exerted on the formulation of US national security policy, and that enforcing a sharp distinction between the two was impos-sible.

Today in “the Civil War never really ended”education, we have segregationist Alabama Gov George Wallace and presidential candidate campaigning at the Gettysburg Centennial among Confederate reenactors who joke about finally taking Washington in ‘64
Starting off activities Tuesday.
Wallace spoke briefly at the dedication of the South Carolina monument. He got an ovation when introduced and again when he said the people of the nation are looking to Alabama, South Carolina and other Southern states to provide leadership for a return to what Wallace called constitutional government.
And again on Tuesday, atuo-graph hunters and well-wishers besieged Wallace every time he stepped out, just as they had on Monday. The Wallace supporters have ranged in age from 7 months to 70 years.
SURPRISE VISIT
A Wallace for President movement in the Confederate forces bivouac even seemed in the making Tuesday. The governor paid a surprise visit to the troops just as they were finishing supper
Tuesday.
They immediately surrounded him to get autographs on hats, drums, flags, social security cards and anything else upon which he could write. He posed for dozens of pictures at the request of individual troops.
"We are ready to come when you call."
"See you in '64."
"On to Washington," were slogans called to the governor as he moved about the tents of the camp.
