Bígí linn for the first screening of the new Take Back the City documentary, made by Scáthán Collective, as part of Glór Na Móna’s Féile na Carraige! 🎬 The documentary explores the current stage of the campaign, using the fight for homes on Mackie’s to explore the wider housing crisis.

There are now nearly 100,000 individuals on the social housing waiting list, and 64,000 are homeless. Behind every one of these numbers is a story like this. One person can try and change their own situation, but together we can change the system. Visit takebackthecity.ie

Take Back the City | Build a better Belfast
Take Back the City is a community coalition that advocates building homes on publicly owned land in Belfast as a way of tackling homelessness and the growing waiting lists for social homes in the city...

The Department for Communities recently published their updated housing statistics this summer, for the first time counting the number of homeless individuals as well as households. The numbers were shocking…

Individual actions like being active and taking notice of the world around you can be so important for your mental wellbeing, but we think there might be more to it than that… What do you think is missing? 👀 #Give5

Those who have fled war and persecution live in destitution. Our climate is changing radically, while people experience increased poverty and marginalisation leaving them unable to access adequate food. These are the people Inez fought for.

33,500 families are facing homelessness, thanks to a lack of social housing supply. People in distress are unable to secure support for mental health, with suicide a particular issue for young men. Communities of colour fear racially motivated attacks daily.

She was critical in securing those commitments, and critical of the manner in which they were implemented in the years that followed, particularly of the primacy good relations were given over equality, and the effective veto to progress that this handed bad actors.

On this day in 1943, PPR's founder, trade unionist, women's rights and human rights activist Inez McCormack was born. Along with many others, Inez fought relentlessly to secure commitments to human rights and equality in the Good Friday Agreement.
Inez McCormack looks up and to the left. Caption reads "Attempting to build 'good relations' on the basis of denying the needs, frustrating the rights and silencing the voices of the poorest is wrong in itself as much as it is destructive to the goal of building a shared future."

Structural factors like inequality, poverty, discrimination, unemployment, and homelessness all affect our mental health. In recent years, global organisations like the UN and WHO have urged governments to pay more attention to these social drivers of mental distress.

Good relations. A useful framework to help the state promote equality between different groups? Or a problematic, ambiguous term that can be used as an excuse to avoid tackling inequality?

But while we all have different housing issues, or landlords, we all have one issue in common: a broken system that prioritises profit over safe, secure homes for all. 🏠

If the Department doesn't know how many children are arriving at Emergency Departments in mental health crisis, how can it know the scale of the problem or whether services are meeting the need? This isn't just a data issue. It's an accountability issue.

We asked the Department of Health for Northern Ireland-wide data on children aged 6–17 attending A&E because of mental health concerns. It could not provide it. The Department said it holds data on overall A&E attendances, but not the mental-health-related information we requested.

One of its top three calls to action is for a data-informed child health system, one that can identify need early, expose gaps and inform decisions about services and resources. But a recent FOI request by New Script highlights how far away we are from this.
