When I was a teenager, I went to a gynecologist who told me that he wasn't going to prescribe me birth control because I "shouldn't be having sex." After that, I went to a Planned Parenthood health center. My periods were so bad that I was blacking out during school. When the other doctor wouldn't help me, Planned Parenthood did. -Haley

What was sex ed like for you? Sex education should include a wide variety of age-appropriate social, mental, and sexual health topics— working together like building blocks as kids go from grades K-12. #School #SexEducation #BackToSchool

Sex ed in elementary school can mean learning healthy relationships, proper names for body parts and puberty prep, to ask permission and how to say "no," respect for all kinds of families, cultures, and identities, how to resist pressure to act a certain way, and that everyone is unique and this is a good thing.

Sex ed in middle school can mean learning tools to stay safe online, what STIs are, the meaning of sexual orientation, to navigate peer pressure and bullying, how to love and care for your body, how to set and respect boundaries, how to make big decisions, and how pregnancy happens and ways it can be prevented.

Sex ed in high school can mean learning consent in sex and dating, how to make thoughtful decisions about sex and relationships, unhealthy vs health relationships, media literacy, how to care for yourself, safer sex, birth control, and pregnancy options, how to get sexual and reproductive health care, and how society influences ideas about sex, gender, and race.

This week, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit upheld a ruling permanently blocking an Indiana law that tried to censor Planned Parenthood’s abortion-related speech. We’re glad the court rejected this law and protected providers’ rights to give patients truthful information.
