Thank you @hcrichardson.bsky.social! This is wonderful. I wish I’d been able to share with my student this Fall, but we are on the cusp of the Stamp Act tomorrow. There’s always (and will be) next semester! heathercoxrichardson.substack.com/p/bacons-reb...

M.I.A.’s “Paper Planes” uses that songs instrumental opening. Its gunshots and ringing cash register turn stereotypes of immigrants as dangerous and greedy into satire. M.I.A. is a British artist of Sri Lankan Tamil heritage who experienced war and displacement herself.

The Clash’s “Straight to Hell” (1982) connects unemployment and hostility toward immigrants in Britain with the abandonment of children fathered by American servicemen in Vietnam. Its portraits of exclusion expose the human consequences of war, racism, and economic upheaval.

The Clash released the double A-side single “Should I Stay or Should I Go” and “Straight to Hell” 44 years ago this week (Sept. 17, 1982). The latter song was later sampled for M.I.A.’s 2007 single “Paper Planes,” famously featured in the film Slumdog Millionaire.

Tom Petty’s Full Moon Fever (1989) began as Songs from the Garage. This unused cover places him in Mike Campbell’s garage studio: a solo debut rooted in collaboration. The released cover emphasizes the star; this one preserves the setting behind his creative renewal.

Yesterday I enjoyed an opportunity to interview and conduct a student-based Q&A with a prominent American presidential historian. I’m hopeful that our students took a lot of insight and advice from the historian, and my presence was minimal to help them gain from our guest’s experience and work.

Before losing her life in 1986 aboard Space Shuttle Challenger, Christa McAuliffe was set to be the first teacher in space with plans to teach a lesson to kids around the world from orbit. Today is her birthday, and even now, her courage and dedication to education continues to inspire.

This poster promised “HERE COME THE BEATLES.” Yet their August 29, 1966 concert at Candlestick Park marked a departure: the close of their last American tour and #theBeatles’ final concert before the Apple rooftop. They left the stage, but their most experimental studio years were still ahead.
