'Now i'm not saying the shooter had a time machine and travelled back in time to commit the attack after he read Lewis' post... but it's not clear to me that he didn't.'
screenshot of text from the article: Around an hour earlier, a gunman shot up a synagogue in Belleville, Ont., grievously injuring a police officer on Judaism’s holiest day of the year. It’s not clear to me that you can draw a straight line from Lewis’ post to the Belleville shooting, but, on their own merit, Lewis’ comments endanger Jews everywhere in Canada.

...i'm not an American, nor am I 35. Will suggested for 'a 35 year old american things have gotten considerably better', I responded with 'for the demographic you suggested, things are materially worse in very important ways'

...i'm sorry, i'm not following what you mean? Things are not universally getting better. Some things are in fact getting measurably worse. I don't think it's the end of the world that american's lives are becoming shorter and meaner, but it seems kinda silly to say they aren't?

An American who has lived 35 years has seen both the maternal mortality rate of their generation increase, and the average life expectancy of their generation decrease. I know that's 'cherry picking' stats, but those do seem like two fairly important ones.

Amongst all the other funny bits of not understanding South Africa, there is also, y'know, the fact that a far right afrikaner party is in coalition with the government. Like, surely the left wouldn't say this guys opposition to zimbabwa migrants is racist, right? en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Corn%C3...

Should healthcare be universal or means tested? In Canada that's a center v. right wing debate. In the US that's a far left vs. left debate.

I hate to ruin the secret to Badiali pizza, but it's 'You can order online ahead of time. There is no line for preorders. Sunday morning still had spaces for 6:30pm on a sunny sunday afternoon of a long weekend. Theres still slots available for 9:30. Line culture in Toronto is insane.

If your arguments against generative AI in music sound identical to what musicians were saying a century ago, you should reflect on how effective their argument was. They weren't wrong, jobs and profits went away. But it wasn't the 'robots' who did it, it was the capitalists.
An advertisement from the early 20th century depicting a robot jamming a bunch of instruments into a sausage maker, resulting in a horrible noise as musical notes are extruded into a tin of 'canned music for theatres'.

The vinyl record put thousands of orchestra musicians out of work. They rose against it, calling it a soulless facsimile, not real art. In the end, capitalists replaced the music industry with 'the record industry', where the bulk of profits went not to artists, but capitalists who monetized music

Pragmatic tech enthusiast: Don't believe the lies capitalists tell you about luddites. Luddites didn't hate technology, they hated capitalists using automation to consolidate power and steal the fruits of the workers labour. They crossdressed and did crimes about it.

Or this tired chestnut, as if jews not noticing a nazi symbol is somehow escpatory. Nazis dont generally show up to barmitzvahs ripping cryptofacist imagery. Its punk shows, furry conventions, ttrpg sessions, etc, where you will generally find people who are on the lookout for this sort of thing.

The risk isn’t the technology. The risk is in people who should know better getting whipped up in the hype and helping normalize tech’s narratives so we don’t pay attention to (and rein in) what they’re actually doing in the present.

We said it would happen too. None of this is a surprise to anyone. And maybe give up on the schatenfreude. Leopards are eating our faces now, but they're coming for you next. You voted for this as much as we did.

Toronto is dedicated to affordable housing (for cars). The policies council implements to ensure parking remains affordable would make even the most strident housing advocates blush.

'Mark Carney isn't sanctioning Venezuela because he wants to support American Imperialism on nakedly pragmatic grounds, he's doing it so he doesnt get outflanked on the issue by western conservatives'. That's really your take? You think Wild Rose yahoos care if we're sanctioning Venezuela?

(I mean it would be cool if he provided naval escorts to break Israel's decade long naval embargo. But I'm not expecting revolutionary actions. Just something that doesnt keep us in the top 10 most toadying US allies.

Power mac @powermac.bsky.social · 24/01/2026
The content of his speech being insufficiently revolutionary is not my critique. Its the actions of his government being in lockstep with US imperialism. Recognize Palestine, lift sanctions on Venezuela. These aren't earthshaking political actions.

Power mac @powermac.bsky.social · 24/01/2026
You know Canada is still sanctioning Venezuela and arming Israel, right? We still don't recognize Palestine, unlike a majority of the world, the un, heck a majority of the g20. We are, under Carney very much US's imperial lackey with no plan on changing.
000
Power mac @powermac.bsky.social · 24/01/2026
Sooooo... we're not going to stop acting in lockstep with the US on its imperial projects, right? We'll still sanction the regimes the yanks want to topple, and arm their regional proxies. Carney saying 'yeah, we're doing this for pragmatic not ideological reasons', is that brave to you?

The guard are there as a threat, if the people of MN actively resist ICE, Walz 'protect people's right to passively resist ICE' (By putting down any active resistance). Walz's plan is to let ICE abducted thousands of people (until they get bored) and the guard are there to enforce that.

Zohran has a first amendment right to reject the politicized definition of terrorism. Moreover, Hamas does still contest the monopoly of violence in about half of Gaza. If you want to run a hospital in besieged Gaza, you need approval from both Hamas and the IDF.
