worked on some very minor touchups to @terrazzo.app and finally got a stupid idea out of my head—responsively “snapping” elements to a grid was way way way easier to do than I thought thanks to CSS round! just specify 40px (or whatever) for the “snap to” param and it does all the work

Below, there’s a code sample where all this package does is return the number 299792458. Nothing else. You install this package to install a number. That’s it.

picture of cartoon wimpy, in color, showcasing 8 photorealistic burgers in front of him and a 9th in his hand. text reads “It’s Tuesday Time To Pay Up.” the background is a zoomed in “gross-up” shot of another photorealistic burger. there are so many pixels of burger on this image, it’s nauseating. you can almost smell the image, and by extension, wimpy, a man whose body is fully burger at this point

holy shit. foundation451.org, a nonprofit dedicated to getting banned/challenged books back in student hands in the state of FL, had to relocate to MN after the 6th (!) DoE investigation into the org
The Foundation 451 newsletter dated May 1, 2025

A message from Adam,

It has been a while. In the time since last I wrote we have had to pack and move. I do, truly, feel a bit like a political refugee. We have effectuated (a term very much in the news now) a transition for us and Foundation 451 to Minnesota, where we can continue to work for literacy and inclusion in Florida, Texas, and elsewhere much more safely and without fear of being sued by the state of Florida. This occurred as the Florida Department of Education opened its sixth investigation against me. We know, as a teacher, I would not have made it through this year with my job intact. As you may be aware, a Brevard County teacher was fired for using a student's preferred name, and Florida will take away her license as well, while at the same time dropping charges against an elementary school teacher and principal for hosting a house-party with drugs, alcohol, and minors, and evading the police when they showed up. They had their felony charges dropped. But the AP English teacher lost her job for using the name a student asked her to use.

In the meantime, Florida SB 1692 could define classics as pornography. What is SB 1692? It, in essence, circumvents The Miller Test, established in 1973 by the Supreme Court in Miller V California, is pretty simple: it's a three-part test, asking: 1) Does the average person, applying community standards, find it appeals to prurient interest? 2) Does it depict sexual conduct in a patently offensive way? 3) Does it lack serious literary, artistic, political, or scientific value? In other words, was the material, as a whole, MEANT to be pornographic? Is any section offensive, in and of itself, or not a necessary part of the whole (does the whole suffer if it is excluded?) and does the work have value? This law would circumvent that and not allow the Miller Test to be used. Any depiction of anything considered sexual would be banned. Hemmingway? Gone. Maya Angelou? Gone …

taking a trip through the CSS graveyard today and remembering things like Astroturf. The State of CSS survey is such a good timecapsule for these things, like revisiting 2020’s 2020.stateofcss.com/en-US/techno...

RIP humpyCase
Quoted text from Wikipedia’s article on “Camel case:” The earliest use of the name "Camel Case" occurs in 1995, in a post by Newton Love. Love has since said, "With the advent of programming languages having these sorts of constructs, the humpiness of the style made me call it HumpyCase at first, before I settled on CamelCase. …”

how do I make JS sort filenames correctly? please
Code snippet in JavaScript. First line shows an array with the items button-a.css, button.css, button-42.css. Second line calls list.sort(), and gives the output “button-42.css, button-a.css, button.css.” Third line calls “list.sort((a, b) => a.localeCompare(b, 'en-us', { numeric: true })),” and gives the same output: button-42.css, button-a.css, button.css.

In all scenarios, the implication is that the built-in methods of JavaScript put the shorter filename (button.css) behind other, longer filenames (button-42.css, button-a.css), every time.

kinda wild that the State of React survey has such negative sentiment for its core APIs. almost feels like devs are forced to use it more than choose it themselves. there are also about 4k fewer responses this year. who knows why but could be similar reasons 2024.stateofreact.com/en-US/featur...
stacked bar chart showing public sentiment of the useEffect API for React. 34% like it, 16% hate it, the rest feel indifferent. useCallback is right below it with similar sentiment: 31% like it, 12% hate it, the rest don’t care.

say what you will about Google’s AI but it is comedy gold
Google Maps review of Autozone. Google AI has imposed a card featuring official AutoZone stock photography of customer service, juxtaposed to an actual review: “They’ll say ‘happy to help’ then get as far as possible as fast as possible.” The design looks official, almost seeming like AutoZone themselves endorses this statement that their service staff run away from customers.

most people don’t know “wai-fu” is originally portmanteau of WAI-ARIA + kung fu, used to describe someone really good at making accessible interfaces. IDK how other people are using the term
typeahead tag box in GitHub settings. given the search term “wai,” the results are, in order: wails, waifu, wait, wai-aria, wails-app.

npm trends line chart showing React, Svelte, and Vue downloads from Jan–Dec 2024. React went from 20M to 25M downloads, a large but predictable increase. Vue is more modest by comparison, going from just under 5M to just over. But Svelte, at the bottom, started at somewhere around 1M downloads and climbed slowly until Oct where it shot quickly up to 2M by current time. Svelte’s recent sharp upward curve is circled with arrows calling attention to it.

Rapoport’s Rules of discourse:
1: You should attempt to re-express your target's position so clearly, vividly, and fairly that your target says, "Thanks, I wish I’d thought of putting it that way."
2: You should list any points of agreement (especially if they are not matters of general or widespread agreement).
3: You should mention anything you have learned from your target.
4: Only then are you permitted to say so much as a word of rebuttal or criticism.

Product photo of a grandma in 3 positions. In the first, she’s standing upright, wearing a pink vest. In the second, she’s falling backwards in the pink vest. In the final, she’s laying down, and airbags have emanated from all around the vest, including around her head, protecting her from the fall. The photo is staged.
