There is an incredibly stark delineation between the systems regulators of certain sectors (largely the ones our elites currently work in or would like to work in one day when they leave parliament, etc), and the professional regulators of, say, health and social care practitioners.

With the former, scandal after scandal is met with hand-ringing and appeals for everyone to just behave better please. With the latter, the faintest whiff of moral panic is met with calls to crush individual professionals into a fine paste.

'Sensible' is a handy cloak they wear to never have to reflect on the fact they're old fashioned Chicago school zealots at heart. The entire Treasury and any SpAd who passed through the BoE should be tasered to death, or at least never be allowed near the levers of policy ever again.

It'll never get more nuanced than that. They'll never go "well, her tax cuts were really stupid and the markets reacted accordingly". It'll always be "cant break the rules. Thems the rules". OBR brain all the way down.

The brief Truss premiership really fucked this country more than most realise. By spectacularly providing evidence for the superficially compelling argument that 'deviation from the fiscal rules' is ruinous, she's given these twats the excuse to never do expansive economic policy ever again.

PotsAndPansRobot @potsandpansrobot.bsky.social · 02/09/2026
The argument doesnt even work on it own terms. How can they be imperative to growth, when every PM since (except truss) has stuck to them and our GDP growth has been anemic for nearly 20 years? They are a blocker on growth, obviously. And anyone not a cheese-brained monetarist can see that.

"How else will school leavers plug the gaping holes in their CVs?" Ah, yes. A few hours stacking shelves will definitely bridge the casm between rapidly vanishing entry level roles and the slightly less rapidly vanishing 'skilled' roles. Im very wise.

This is is just a re-hashing of a mooted coalition-era policy that thankfully never came to pass. Its just as execrable as it was then, but it won't stop lots of sensibles nodding and stroking their chins thoughtfully.

This basically a variation on his anti-wealth tax stance, isnt it. Dont do this seemingly very good idea because of the nebulous bad things that only I can see would happen. Doesnt matter that the bad things are already happening and are one of the reasons to do the good thing in the first place.

Or maybe Brexit and the revolving door of Prime ministers, and the rise of the far right, are all just symptoms of a wider refusal of our institutions to grapple with the collapse of the social contract post-2008? Just sayin...

I think that if you understand what’s happening here as “none of us have a clue what we’re doing but we’ve bought these magic beans off a wizard and we’re quite optimistic” then that will cover you for most of the ensuing outcomes.

Also the absolute refusal to connect the rise in this kind of rhetoric with deteriorating material circumstances is infuriating. Dismantling the public sphere doesnt make people racist on its own, but it sure makes the process of radicalisation easier.

I do think 'the reason' our betters have alighted on for why we're so damn ungovernable at present, is that they struggle with control of the narrative these days. Foreign policy in particular was so much easier when you only had to feel the collars of a handful of senior editors to hold the line.

The Children's Wellbeing and Schools Act is meant to address the profiteering, but unless they they really squeeze profits below the double-digit margins that PE generally expects (and they wont for fear of a collapse in provision), its just fiddling round the edges and little will change.

PotsAndPansRobot @potsandpansrobot.bsky.social · 26/05/2026
The private care sector also picks and chooses what provision it offers. There is a shocking shortage of specialist secure accommodation for children with the most complex needs because, as you suggest, its much less profitable. The market will not provide for this stuff.

Not to suggest finance elites are the good guys here. They're awful people who would gladly accommodate the worst reactionary tendencies of the GC movement right up to the moment it started hitting their bottom line, which this would do. This is very much a 'let them fight' scenario.

Cos if youre talking chromosomes and gonads and what not, then that's health data. And that's not defacto special category, that IS special category data. Any attempt to carve out some kind of trans-related exception here would get the EU spitting feathers and see the UK lose its adequacy decision.

PotsAndPansRobot @potsandpansrobot.bsky.social · 26/05/2026
Absolutely. The ECHR (as opposed to the EHRC) have been much better than anything coming out of the UK. But this is more about an attempt to change the interpretation of 'sex' as defacto special category data. This is where the GC insistence on referring to 'biological sex' come back to bite them.

So we may end up in a situation where, instead of having the UK establishment bend over backwards to accommodate these arseholes, the GC lawfare community may finally find out what it feels like to have one of the great arms of the UK establishment pushing back for once. Here's hoping at least. End/

This would make the provision of goods and services to Europe substantially more complicated and expensive. Particularly financial services. The UK financial sector, with all its traditional heft and influence will simply NOT allow this to happen. 4/

So now they need to change UK data law to prevent a slew of costly civil legal challenge arising from ad hoc vigilante enforcement, that would make even JKR blanch. However, they may be about to bite off more than they can chew here. 2/
