River scientist who knows a bit about floods, floodplains, levees, and people. I may also suffer from an unhealthy obsession with Mississippi River.

Streamgages that have been collecting data since the 40s and 50s are being shut down in Illinois. If we're having trouble finding funding to monitor pollution in our waterways, here's my suggestion: The industry responsible for that pollution should pay for it.

My Turn | Illinois needs more water monitoring, not less
"Time is of the essence. The streamgages will be turned off Thursday, but we should have several more weeks before they will be removed entirely. Once the gauges are pulled

Wow. I did not realize lactating cow drank that much water.

Jon Remo @potamologist.bsky.social · 29/09/2026
So these cows use 1/4 the amount of water the average American per day? Are they showering three times a day and watering their pastures?

Folks here are trying to figure out how to run data centers on biomass crops. Then locate the power generation and the centers at abandoned power plant sites / coal mine sites across Illinois to mine reclamation subsidies and avoid public ire. 😬

Thanks. I could rent a backhoe and connect it for real but, I am sure the TNC and the neighbors would go for that.

How are you going to restore hydraulic connectivity at Emiquon (natural flood cycles) for $150,000. Inquiring minds would Lille to know.

Something from your field that everyone should know: Flood damages are acts of man.

When the Ogallala Aquifer runs dry or it water becomes to expensive to use for the irrigation of corn and soybeans the dust will return and we will need a bigger bowl.

I agree, as long as the prairies want to live on floodplains. Trees really like floodplains too and I am not sure prairies have exclusivity when it comes to floodplains. But, what ever the outcome, much better than a landcover I have to subsidize as a tax paying citizen of this county.

Thats’s great for Iowa. However, I flew over the very oligotrophic Lake Superior in a sea blame a few years back and could see the bottom of the lake (>50 ft deep) from 3000 feet up. Hands down Superior has the clearest water east of the Rockies. I know apple 🍎 vs. 🍊 to Iowa streams/rivers.

Grass is not a common cover type in most bank/ floodplain cover in most temperature- humid rivers. Willow, River Beerch, Sycamores, Cotton Woods, and Silver Maples are common Floodplain species along larger rivers in the Midwest. As far as management it depends on the goal(s), not what’s typical.

Best river in this neck of the woods. Watershed to steep to farm, just out of the lead belt it barely, escaped being dammed because of karstic bedrock makes for a bad dam foundation, low flood mitigation, water supply, and hydroelectric services. It is a feak of geography.

1/4 of a foot of rain makes sense, not a 1/4 of an inch. Units are important ;) Either way it takes a while for land with little to no slope to drain. But, that’s why we have federally subsided crop insurance.

Worth a read if you are intrested in alternatives to current large river floodplain agriculture in the central and southern Mississippi River Valley. Though farms like this will still need the federally subsidized levee system but perhaps less crop insurance - www.propublica.org/article/illi...

Disaster gains are real. Why would one try and infrastructure more resilient to risk when a good disaster will likely bring relief funding or mitigation grants post disaster? This is why the U.S. has ad-hoc disaster policy, no one wants to invest in resilience until after the disaster happens.

The first “U.S. environmental” Law was the Rivers and Harbors Act of 1899 in part because our rivers were so polluted at the turn of the century 20th century and of course there was the famous 1901 Missouri v. Illinois and Sanitary District of Chicago case.

So, not much has changed in 9 years. Current administration is currently working to get SIUC off the list again. If this post is true, I am surprised the education dean has time to teach. Most of the deans travel 50% of the time or more to fund raise for the university.
