huh so it's actually been moved a few times to accommodate cars
THE WASHINGTON MONUMENT. Chicago, May 12.-I wonder just what next the motorist will ask for his own convenience to afford him more of the streets?
I refer to the request for removal of Washington's statue from the 51st street entrance to Washington park. I am one of the unfortunates living near this intersection of the city. I say unfortunate because it seems Chicago ran out of traffic signals at 47th and Grand boulevard, and those of us who are walking and trying to save up for rainy days, instead of riding and wondering where the next installment is coming from to pay on an auto, have to take our lives in hand when trying to cross Grand boulevard at 51st street.

The city has already afforded the autoist a lot of new leeway by widening South Park, hence he should be willing that we with Shank's horses have our 5 country's father's monument to dart behind for protection as his physical body protected us when the British were trying to run us down. The traffic is so bad out here that when we step off the curb we trust to the good Lord [and a cop during the five to six evening rush hour] to see us safely to the other side.

If Chicago is to remove all obstacles for the pleasure of those who ride, why can't she have a heart for the pedestrian by putting in a traffic signal at this place.

MRS. G. D. REYNOLDS.

...but that's wrong—they donated a statue of the marquis de lafayette and attended the unveiling of this one, but this was commissioned by a purpose-formed "washington statue association" made up of women from dc (ironically, i think the new york times was one of the main sources of the confusion)

General Horace Porter has interested himself greatly in the project and devot ed much time to it ever since the affair in its Parisian connections has been given in to his charge. Those in America main- ly responsible for the statue, however, are the body of public minded women in Washington. known as the Washington Statue Association, althou h they were incorporated under the title of the A sociation of American Women for the Presentation of a Statue of Washington to France, despite the fact that the cred it for the enterprise has frequently been misplaced at the doors of the Daughters of the American Revolution.

"other washingtons" took a static and overlooked statue to george washington and—by surrounding it with flags honoring other people named washington, both famous and not—turned it into something alive, a shared archive one of the stronger ways i've seen of recontextualizing a flawed monument

oooooof
Jean-Jacques Rousseau once wrote that difference between a pedant and a teacher is that a pedant always explains but a teacher knows when to explain. Being a knowitall is a sign of loserdom, as Umberto Eco wrote in his final novel, “Numero Zero” (about a hack journalist): Losers, like autodidacts, always know much more than winners. If you want to win, you need to know just one thing and not waste your time on anything else: the pleasures of erudition are reserved for losers. The more a person knows, the more things have gone wrong.
