I hate the attitude that puts human interests above life on Earth! I hesitated to post about the books Hayden Panettiere recorded with us in 2020, given her passing, but she loved animals and sincerely desired to teach people about them so they would value them. www.animalaudiobooks.com

Scholl's memoir, "The White Rose": "The conservative Christian parties smoothed Hitler's path to power. Ten years later, Germany was a hotbed of robbers and rapists who waged war against all of Europe..." The Scholls lived through the Nazi era in Germany. posthypnoticpress.com/product/the-...

Their leaflets repeatedly underscored the issue which was to be decisive in delaying the downfall of Hitler's Reich--Nazi anti-Communism. Along with anti-Semitism, to which it was linked in many ways, anti-Communism was the most virulent force in the Nazi ideology. Millions of "good" Germans did not like the Nazis, yet thought that they were the lesser evil compared with Communists. Everything old is new again! Mary Titcomb, librarian of the Washington County Free Library, Maryland, is generally credited with launching the first bookmobile. She used a horse-drawn wagon to deliver books throughout the county. bookmobiles.wordpress.com/2013/02/28/t...
Mary Titcomb’s “Book Wagon”. Courtesy of the Washington County Free Library. Mary Titcomb is generally credited with creating the first bookmobile. She used a horse-drawn wagon, depicted in this image, to deliver books throughout the county. A man, possibly Elmer Corderman, stands next to the world’s first motorized bookmobile, an International Harvester Autobuggy.

The truck was outfitted with shelves for 300 books, with enough room inside for four deposit station cases. Elmer Corderman was hired as a “chauffer” accompanied by Nellie Chrissinger as a librarian, creating the world’s first bookmobile driver and librarian team. With the ability to cover more ground, demand increased, so much so that the Harvester was replaced with a bigger Koehler truck in 1915.

What goes into producing one finished hour of audio? Generally, for straightforward nonfiction, from 6 to 10 hours of work by a team of people. For fiction? More like 10 to 12 hours for one hour without any bells and whistles. Adding a soundscape and music adds hours of work. #audiobooks #books

One of the things I loved about producing this book was putting together the music. Heather Henderson, who narrated & co-produced, suggested that, as the radio was so important, we hear music from the era. I became obsessed with the idea & it resulted in one of my favorite reviews. :) #audiobooks
Love the book, the reader, the production.

The music! I've returned books because of the inane and intrusive electronic music that endlessly infested the readings. But this book's music-- I want a playlist! The short clips that introduce and end the sections are always appropriate, never intrusive, never (so far s I can tell) electronic, and range from jazz and dance music of the time (late 1930's) to well-played classics and even some forebodingly dissonant clips from the avant-garde of the time.

I liked the reader very much. By the middle of the first chapter I had a hard time convincing myself it wasn't really Betty herself reading the book. That kind of reader. Your mileage may vary.

Okay, I liked the book when I first read it. But if you haven't seen it or didn't like it, you may find this reader and this production irresistable. If Betty's time in the sanatorium doesn't appeal to you (I'd seen my share of nurses like that in my childhood and loved vicariously getting even), the opening chapters on her childhood might. The story itself seems both tighter and more skillfully constructed than some of her adult books -- at least in this production. Breaking the reader's heart with comedy is a pretty good trick, too.

As I get ready to put on an audiobook & do some housecleaning, I thought I'd post a few suggestions from our catalogue for relaxed listening. Something to take your mind off of the craziness we are all bombarded with daily. First up, some books about animals, because we LOVE animals. Here are my 2.

She is. Henry is very handsome, too. He's also a rescue - he was starving when we got him. He was so skinny I thought he must be a Doberman cross! But now he looks like a normal German Shepard. So, it's Handsome Henry and Pretty Patsy. :)

Many chose #veganism for the planet. But cutting out all meat is a deal breaker for many. On the other hand, we in North American eat far too much meat. Eleanor Boyle offers sound reasons to reconsider our diet choices & diminish the amount of meat we eat. posthypnoticpress.com/product/high...

When one is stuck in the patter of yo-yo dieting, food obsessions, & food cravings, it is hard to find a way out. Many don't take the notion of food addiction seriously. Dr. Vera Tarman's excellent book provides another path to overcoming 'food addition.' posthypnoticpress.com/product/food...

At some point in her twenties, Sarah was over 300 lbs. In her early 30s, she went on a serious diet/exercise kick & lost lots of weight. Here we are in the kitchen together sometime in the early 80s. But this weight loss didn't last. After having a son in her late 30s, the weight started to return.

Before Sarah was put on weight loss drugs, she wasn't large. Here's a picture of her with 'the twins' - me & my brother Carl. She's around 14 and we're around 2 years old. She looks great! But sadly, she was a victim of the prejudices of the time. Who was she to question a doctor's prescription?
Family picture from the 1960s: Sarah Jane (around 14 years old) with her younger siblings, Carl and Carlyn Craig (twins, around 2 years old) in a stroller.

While I wanted another dog, I wasn't sure if I was ready. This event changed my mind. So I started to think about getting another dog. My sister saw a notice that someone was trying to re-home Henry asap - they had just adopted him & realized they made a mistake. Which is how we got Henry. :)

along with a couple of other small items, which she'd already put out on the back porch. My husband had been in his workshop. He arrived on the scene & suggested that he call her some help. She took off. He didn't notice that items, either. I was between dogs, my lovely Cookie having passed away.

After we'd had Patsy for nearly a year, Henry realized that he, too, could bark. I remember vividly the 1st time he joined Patsy & ran to the door barking along with her. He galloped by us with a joyful grin on his face. You could see how happy he felt just being a dog. Not that we encourage them
