The "LINDSEY O. GRAHAM SANCTIONING RUSSIA AND IRAN ACT OF 2026" becomes a bit sinister when the US sanctions other countries from importing petroleum products from Russia but increases its own imports. It becomes a "LINDSEY O. GRAHAM SANCTIONING ENEMIES OF RUSSIA ACT OF 2026"

Can't help but think that this is a problem of misaligned incentives that might be hard to fix with individual action. Here in Germany the fixes were "don't allow people to elect the president anymore, they are too stupid and elect old, mentally declining would be kings (Paul von Hindenburg)" and

I got also taught in German school that Hitler turned on the money printing machine again to finance the war and then had to conquer other nations for ROI otherwise there would have been hyperinflation again.

I don't get this. Has the US lost the capacity to design/regulate markets? And the solution is to use a system like we had in east Germany with a public option (HO)? Recently heard an interview (Odd lots) about Aldi in NY... maybe make it easier for them to build more discounters?

One problem was that the existing ones were becoming old (>50 years) and unsafe (e.g. BWR instead of PWR) and no one wanted to build new ones. At some point it is better to rebuild things in a modern way instead of maintaining something old.

Needs a clear goal definition first. Is the goal to have a competitor to whatever US company "wins" AI, or to have good AI research. E.g. we have good database research, but US hyperscalers/companies are providing the database services.

I also don't get why there aren't any people standing up to them. For example the investment banks very well could have said that the SpaceX IPO is bad for long term business and refused to participate. My only conclusion can be that they are either too stupid to coordinate or are okay with it.

I'm for the digital Euro btw. but because I don't like seignorage accruing to often private (but highly regulated) entities. My guess is that this is also why banks don't like it.

The Chinese could do the same thing and if the US sanctions a bank they could use e.g. the rare earths lever. At some point it is about state vs state, if a state chooses to protect a bank.

In that case we could pass a law that forces banks to continue to offer Wero. At some point it comes down to who has more power/sovereignty. The could do the same with the ICJ case (pass a law that disallows Microsoft/companies under DMA to not offer their services for certain reasons).

From a capacity perspective 10 very large tankers per day through the straight would fully restore pre-war flows. And that's not needed because of the pipelines. So the northern route would not be a bottleneck.
