Very likely that the US/China restrictions on AI are a factor there. Not only the fact that Anthropic/OpenAI don't serve HK but also that any plan of private DC would be highly constrained there (no NVidia/AMD) and that any future development might come under the transfer restrictions.

this one's amazing too. Meta confirms once again their "Mendacious Fucks" title.
jonny (nonvenomous) @jonny@neuromatch.social

OH what's this???

/etc/hatch/env

hmm a feature flag labeled as a "killswitch" for proxying requests to anthropic is certainly interesting to seeeeeeeeeeeee in meta's big AI bet.

edit: sorry to be a bit cryptic here, the implication was definitely corporate espionage, more clearly said: https://

-----
ticho @ticho@mas.to

@jonny The way the comment is worded I don't think enabling this would relay anything anywhere - note the "Meta-internal proxy". It's probably only intended to be used inside their network, probably meant as an override for internal development.

------
@patrick@retro.social

@ticho @jonny The idea about such "internal proxies" is to get whatever would be sent to Anthropic plus - more importantly for Meta - what gets sent back in a log, so that they can train their own systems on the way Anthropic responds to users.

It's a common complaint about Chinese models that they were supposedly built like that, using examples of the Good American Models to "clone" the work. Besides the general "we may copy everything with impunity but how dare they copy our output" hypocrisy of the argument, it's interesting to see this in one of Meta's systems, too.

Richard Marles needs to do more than set up a taskforce, he needs to treat this like the crime it is. If an individual hacked into Medicare they'd be going to jail, but there is no accountability for Big Tech.

one could also argue that the cat is out of the bag with open models so most closed model (except the newest or on hardest mode) should stop refusal on cyber stuff entirely. but again, you can't have your cake and eat it too.

Mendaciousness or imbecility? one can argue whether the cursor of refusal is too tight/too open but this magical thinking, lmao.
OpenWorker is an open source project, and identifying and addressing security gaps is a priority. I cannot think of any security benefit to refusing to help us find security issues in our own code. If any issues exist, it is better that we find them before an adversary does.

a particular way ppl can't seem to extrapolate how ai will impact the world is that some of their capabilities are advancing much faster than their (cap.) use is diffusing. so they end up projecting current cap. (at best, more often than not, 6m+ old) for their multi-year projections

Today, we notified SpaceX that we intend to wind down our contract providing OpenAI models to Cursor, with a proposed shutoff date of November 12, 2026. To maximize the time that developers can retain access to our models through Cursor, we are giving the maximum notice provided by our contract. This decision was incredibly tough, as we care deeply about our models being broadly available for developers. We are making this choice because we cannot be confident that SpaceX will use our technology within our terms of service, based on our experience with Elon Musk's companies violating contracts.

Github is struggling because AI-boosted coding increased the number of commits 14x in the past year, and the pace is still accelerating. The site is struggling to keep up. Github's COO confirms it here: https://x.com/kdaigle/status/2040164759836778878

Platform activity is surging. There were 1 billion commits in 2025. As of three months ago, it was 275 million per week, on pace for 14 billion this year if growth remains linear (spoiler: it won't.)

20% of all GitHub accounts were created in the past 6 months

I find it unbelievable, in 2026, that the quoted Q. can be asked in good faith (esp. on HN) and if it is, we are far from being able to get good laws re. tech.
> I don't understand why a police cruiser can sit in a public space (or even a private one) and write down licence plates and descriptions of passers-by with pen and paper, or record everything around them with dashcams and bodycams for later use, but when it comes to cameras on a pole this would require a warrant.

Scale actually matters. Things that are generally OK at a small scale become problematic at larger scales. A single police cruiser writing down license plates isn't able to track you in the same way a huge surveillance network is, and the opportunities for abuse are much lower.
