I grew up in the rust belt at the very tail end of the industrial heyday. Unionized steel workers and auto assembly workers had a few generations of comparative prosperity. There really was a kind of golden age for some blue collar workers before 1980 (at least compared to now).
Chart of blue collar wages in the rust belt 1945 to 2005 in 2026 dollars
- Steel workers peaked around 1979–80 at ~$47–48/hr in 2026 dollars — then fell sharply after the 1982 recession and mill closures
  - Auto workers peaked in the mid-to-late 1980s at roughly $38–40/hr and held up better as Detroit stabilized
  - Average manufacturing hovered around $27–28/hr at peak (late 1970s) and barely budged in real terms afterward

I know nothing about this, but I was curious and looked up the reference. Since the low point of 2.18 in 2003 we are up to 2.31 in 2025, an extra 1/8 of a person per household. Is that really the root cause? It looks much more dramatic on your squeezed graph, less dramatic when I graphed it.

@virus.sucks Have you seen pluslife results like this. Looks negative to me but is considered INVALID by the device? I've had a few like this recently. Thanks for all your work!
Result of a pluslife covid test using virus.sucks app. Shows green control curve trending up throughout and other curves flat, but is labeled INVALID.

HR PuffNStuf. I basically feel that this show was dredged up from my subconscious in some kind of delirium

If you see this, post a bridge
Manhattan Bridge lit up against the dark sky in the evening with clouds and the city skyline reflecting in the East river. It’s a moody, mysterious, and wide epic view.

The beauty part is at the end where Trumps opponents become the fascists.
If Mr. Trump can manage to convince voters that he is an outlaw hero, then the usual criticisms of him won’t stick. His vices, however grave, will be seen as expressions of the democratic character, bound up with the political system his critics purport to defend. The threat he presents won’t be addressable by limiting foreign influence or vanquishing a single candidate. Indeed, given the nature of the outlaw hero’s appeal, we shouldn’t be surprised if efforts to counter him end up limiting things that are normally cherished as democratic values — not least, the freedom to challenge authority.

VR didn’t go so great last time around either
Fat guy wearing VR goggles, drinking a milkshake outside at a café. Looking comical and silly. But maybe actually just casually indifferent to the world.
