@possibilize (x) . Strange things happen at sea when you run a fleet of robot submarines in the Indian, Pacific & Southern Oceans. All opinions my own

CIVIC Innovation galapogas style. The garbage trucks play music (like an ice cream truck) so you can hear them coming if you forgot to put the bin out. The busses have bike racks on the back and they have these cool wheelchair friendly stairs

USA VS AUS. both teams scored one goal each . It's just that Australia's goal was for the USA team . Is this AUKUS in action?

Qf27's flight path from Syd to Santiago takes it far south into antarctic skys. Last night an Aurora was visible from the starboard side with the wing illuminated red from the strobe on top of the aircraft. #qantas #auroraaustralis

This single shipload of electric vehicles from BYD will cut Australia's annual fuel demand by at least 6 million litres This is what genuine fuel security looks like - not tanks of diesel and rushed trade deals, but cutting our exposure permanently to overseas fossil fuel supply.

An enormous ship docked in Melbourne on Sunday. Its cargo could permanently change Australian motoring
In a major flex of Chinese industrial muscle, a company has used its own purpose-built ship to respond to rampant demand from Australian consumers.

Spotted this amazing stonefish whilst snorkelling at Fitzroy island (Queensland) They are ambush predators & can inflict a very painful (potentially deadly) sting from venomous spines if trodden on This one was in a very prominent location by the jetty preying on bait-fish sheltering there i guess
picture shows a heavily camouflaged , somewhat grumpy looking, fish hiding amongst coral and algae

Oh it's #CTD_AppreciationDay AGAIN! My goto CTD for casual casts is the CastAway here we are, returning from a glider deployment, training indigenous rangers to do CTD casts So their routine water quality monitoring work can include profiles of temperature & Salinity on the Great Barrier Reef 🌊

Doug Webb, an oceanographer and innovator at WHOI, revolutionized how we explore the ocean. Webb is best known as the inventor of the underwater glider, an autonomous vehicle that navigates the ocean by adjusting its internal buoyancy. Learn more about this ocean pioneer: go.whoi.edu/webb

I've been helping a colleague incorporate river flows into a #ROMS model of the #GBR . We had a heatwave in early January followed by a major flood event. The influence of the fresh water flowing onto the reef is stunning in these preliminary results 🌊

We have just deployed 2 ocean gliders to observe an extensive marine heatwave off Western Australia It's very concerning initial readings are 3-4C hotter than normal right down to 100m deep that's a phenomenal amount of extra energy follow live at anfog.ecm.uwa.edu.au 🌊
two yellow ocean gliders are prepared for deployment aboard a chartered work vessel off Onslow Chart of glider observations of temperate at depth , on the right , Black line is climatology (whats normal) coloured lines are current observations from the glider it shows water uniformly 3-4 deg hotter than normal as far as the glider has been able to measure so far (which is 100m deep) . latest charts at https://oceancurrent.aodn.org.au/gliders/index.php

If only there was a way to cool the upper ocean by reintroducing mixing processes, deficient during coral bleaching events on the GBR? Hint there is and we have demonstrated that the cool water is there and we can bring it to the surface www.rrrc.org.au/reef-havens/ 🪸 coral reef #coralbleaching
a multi panel chart that shows the relationship between ocean vertical structure and average wind speed during the 2020 bleaching event near cairns on the Great barrier reef . we can see a highly elevated temperature in the top 20m even though in water instruments showed the water column, as a whole, was cooler than normal. strong winds arrived early in march and fully mixed the water column . leading to a return to normal conditions and an almost 100% recovery of bleached corals

That's a Wrap IUGC2024. Using Ocean Gliders's engineering flight data to visualise ocean mixing processes. The random water flow of ocean mixing processes causes differential flow over each wing that shows up in the rolling motion of the glider

Some cautiously optimistic news from the #GBR. These ocean profiles from yesterday & 6wk ago show recent high winds have mixed the water column to<29c bringing relief to stressed & bleaching corals like 2020&22 when the early arrival of SE winds allowed corals to make an almost 100% recovery
two charts showing temperature and salinity with depth. one group of measurements (taken yesterday ) show an almost perfect vertical line. indicating the water temp and salinity is uniform across the water column. the other group of measurements (from 6wks ago) show a steady gradient in the water column from over 30C at the surface to 27.5C at the bottom. Indicating coral bleaching conditions were brought about by poor temperature distribution in the water column. which is a characteristic of low turbulence conditions brought about by calm conditions. the unasked question is could a supplementary mixing intervention have saved the coral the tress in the first placea wind forecast chart from "Windy" showing strong SE winds for the next weekan underwater photograph of a coral bommie showing some bleached coral, some coral showing unusual fluorescent coloring (an indication of coral stress and that this coral may soon be bleached) and some unbleached coral. if conditions moderate all this coral may survive

It's not looking good for corals on the #GBR folks. The next 4-5 days are going to be very stressful corals; elevated temperature, low winds and low tidal movement (2nd - 4th feb) These look distressingly similar to conditions during the 2016 bleaching event reefhavens.pythonanywhere.com

Hi BlueSky. My first post! I've just fired up my GBR (great barrier reef) in water monitoring site again for this year ahead of this summer We are almost a degree below climatology & with low winds forecast are likely to see a rise in upper ocean temp i'll report regularly over summer
a chart that displays a time series of different paramaters affecting in water conditions on the great barrier reef; water temp @2.5m (red , with climatology shown in orange) , aggregate daily tide change (in green, its a proxy for the strength of tidal currents) , wind speed in blue (daily avg in lite blue, last 7day average in dark blue, forecast values marked with dotted lines (last 7 day wind speed is a rough proxy for the strength of wind driven upper ocean mixing))
