Here’s the bigger ask I mentioned: I owe $6k in back rent. I’ve been selling my limited belongings to reduce the number but it is slow going and I can’t hope to cover it all, especially not in the short time I have. I have enough to cover October rent and little more. More details below.

There are so many “alpha males” out there that think empathy is a weakness. It’s the opposite. Empathy is one of humanity's greatest strengths.

#Comics I read today: Phoenix #13 Psylocke Vol.2 #9 Runaways Vol. 6 #2 Storm Vol. 5 #10 Uncanny X-Men Vol. 6 #18 West Coast Avengers Vol. 4 #9

Phoenix #13 by Stephanie Phillips and Roi Mercado. Jean Grey’s dead sister isn’t so dead after all. Jean’s step-son Cable (by way of her husband Scott Summers and Jean’s clone, you gotta love Marvel timelines) arrives to tell her Sara’s very existence is the reason the future is a galaxy-wide dystopia. Intriguing morality play with only limited gunplay on Cable’s part.
Psylocke Vol.2 #9 by Alyssa Wong and Vincenzo Carratú. Kwannon had one friend growing up in The Hand, Mitsuki. She was killed by their teacher, Master Hayashi. But now that Kwannon is back in Japan, she learns Mitsuki is very much alive. Creepy Japanese horror story. I like it.
Runaways Vol. 6 #2 by Rainbow Rowell and Elena Casagrande. The Runaways are a mess. Nico lost her girlfriend and her Staff of One. Chase ran off with a Gert from the future. And now Doombots have arrived to reclaim the Doombot that is Victor’s friend. I really like the Runaways, although I haven’t yet read the first four volumes. Rainbow Rowell makes these characters likeable and sympathetic, even when they’re being horrible to each other. Or themselves.
Storm Vol. 5 #10 by Murewa Ayodele and Lucas Werneck. Storm is trying to help a new mutant with extinction level fusion/fissure powers. The story is a bit hard for me to follow, but I feel like Storm is well-written, and the art is above average.
Uncanny X-Men Vol. 6 #18 by Gail Simone and Luciano Vecchio. Mutina nightmares, a Friendship Festival to celebrate local mutants, a hospital fire, and Kurt is spending time with a human mom. Gail Simone can pack a lot in twenty pages. This continues to be one of the best titles on the market.
West Coast Avengers Vol. 4 #9 by Jerry Duggan and Danny Kim. This story, like the series itself, centers on Killerwatt and his rehabilitation from villain to Avenger. He and the rest of the WCA (Iron Man, Spider Woman, War Machine, Firestar, Wonder Man, and Ultron) take on Ultron the Scorched. Fast paced, well scripted, and good art.

#Comics I read today: Absolute Wonder Woman #10 Emma Frost: The White Queen #2 Fantastic Four: Fanfare #2 Gotham City Sirens: Unfit For Orbit #4 Gwenpool #3 Jeff the Land Shark #2

Absolute Wonder Woman #10 by Kelly Thompson and Hayden Sherman. Diana attempts to rescue a siren from The Maze. Kelly Thompson is another of my favorite writers, and the art is stunning.
Emma Frost: The White Queen #2 by Amy Chu and Andrea Di Vito. This miniseries takes place when Emma was still a member of the Hellfire Club’s inner circle. Emma is investigating a suspected mole in the inner circle following a security disaster in the previous issue. Surprisingly, this is a taut corporate espionage thriller. Great cheesecake art, too.
Fantastic Four: Fanfare #2. Three stories: “Dinner and a Movie” by Jonathan Hickman and Dustin Weaver is a an immersive movie night with a surprise twist. “Future Uncertain” by John Tyler Christopher has Reed burning the candle at both ends, the side, top, and bottom as well, trying to solve an unsolvable problem. “Hide and Seeker” by Mark Buckingham is a look back at a classic FF story, but seen from the POV of a couple of Doom’s minions. This is a fun collection.
Gotham City Sirens: Unfit For Orbit #4 by Leah Williams and Haining. Despero’s plan is working. But Harley, Ivy, and Selina aren’t done quite yet. Still liking this one. Humorous, but there are genuinely dark moments as well.
Gwenpool #3 by Cavan Scott and Stefano Nesi. It’s been so long since I read the first two issues, I had to go back and reread them. Kate Bishop, Spider-Man, and Jeff the Land Shark are battling a new Weapon X called X-31. Gwenpool, in true comic book fashion, is working behind the scenes. I’ve always liked Gwenpool. I find her whole aware-she’s-in-a-comic-book schitck to be a lot of fun.
Jeff the Land Shark #2 by Kelly Thompson and Tokitokoro. Jeff chases an intangible dark shadow version of himself all the way to Nowhere, enlisting the help of Rocket and Groot. Very cute. Very fun.

Artwork of the book covers of "Magica Riot" and "Magica Riot: Full Bloom," set against a background of purple crystal. Artwork of several main characters - Bloom, Claire, Nova, Hikari, Sara, Iris, Cass, and Hana - surround the book art. Text reads:

#Comics I read today: Pep Comics #75, 76 The Power Fantasy #9 Spider-Girl V3 #2 Wonder Woman V6 #23 Zatanna V3 #6

Pep Comics #75, 76. These are from 1949. While these are a lot of fun, I can’t look past the horrifically racist characterization of some background characters.
The Power Fantasy #9 by Kieran Gillen and Caspar Wijngaard. I’ll let the Image Comics blurb explain the plot for me: “Etienne knows Heavy is hiding a world-threatening son. What’s he going to do? Jacky Magus knows that Eliza Hellbound can stop his plan. Can he convince her to stay on his side? Isabella’s family are dead. Can she do anything about it? No. They’re dead. She’s just going to be sad.” Spectacular story that shows the real power fantasy is believing people with world-destroying superpowers wouldn’t eventually use them.
Spider-Girl V3 #2 by Torunn Grønbekk and André Russo. Maka Akala is a Hawaiian teen living in NYC with her single mom. She has powers that allow her to temporarily adopt another’s power if she can make eye contact. But an encounter with Spider-Man ended up being permanent, so she’s a new the Spider-Girl. The problem is Lady Bullseye is trying to kill her, and she has no idea why. It’s a fun story, and I quite like the art.
Wonder Woman V6 #23. Diana gets a desperate plea for help from Etta Candy, but going to her would violate several treaties between the UN and the Justice League. It’s a strange, violent place where all anyone can say is “Mouse Man knows” and “Mice have ears.” I quite like Tom King as a writer. There’s a fun scene of Batgirl/Stephanie Brown fangirling in the Watchtower and Diana being very gracious about it.
Zatanna V3 #6 by Jamal Campbell. Final issue. With the help of some friends, Zatanna has a final showdown with Allura and the Lady White. Good ending, fantastic art.

#Comics I read today: Money Shot: Comes Again! 2-5 New Champions #7 The New Gods #8

Money Shot: Comes Again! 2-5 by Tim Seeley and Gisèle Lagacé. A billionaire has corrupted a peaceful planet, and it’s up to the Money Shot crew to save them with the help of Larry Welz’s brilliant and iconic horny hippy chick Cherry Poptart - sorry, I mean Popstar, ever since Kellogg’s sued Welz. This is a surprisingly good story.
New Champions #7 by Steve Foxe, Ruairí Coleman, Elisabetta D’Amico, and Adriano Di Benedetto. The New Champions travel to a magical marketplace to find their friend Hellrune. There’s an adorable romance brewing between Gold Tiger, a Wakandan, and Fantasma, a Ghost Rider character created as a non-canonical sidekick to Robbie Reyes that the decided to make canonical. It’s a fun series. Sad there’s only one issue left.
The New Gods #8 by Ram V, Evan Cagle, Stipan Morian, and Pablo Collar. I’ll admit I’m eight issues in and I’m still a bit lost. There was a plot line about someone being sent to kill Scott Free and Barda’s baby, but it’s not even mentioned in this issue. Just a lot of people talking and Scott and Barda taking their baby to meet the Highfather, who looks genuinely delighted to meet him. I haven’t read any of the New Gods comics before this, so I’m missing a lot of backstory. Well, that’s not entirely true. I did read the Tom King mini series from a few years ago. I’m hoping I can start piecing it all together as I get more issues under my belt.

#Comics I read today: Archie #4. Exceptional X-Men #11 Gotham City Sirens: Unfit for Orbit #3 Huge Detective #5 Krypto: the Last Dog of Krypton #2 Money Shot: Comes Again! #1

Archie #4. This was published in 1943. I’m impressed by how the writers make Archie’s bumbling snowball from bad to worse. Just when you think it can’t get worse, it does. And then it gets worse again. And again. This issue includes a couple of pre-Li’l Jinx Joe Edwards stories featuring Bumbie, the Bee-tective, and Cubby, a bear cub.
Exceptional X-Men #11 by Eve L. Ewing and Federica Mancin. I like this story about Kate Pryde, Emma Frost, and Iceman mentoring a trio of young mutants. Because it’s written by Ewing, it’s set in Chicago, and has Riri “Ironheart” Williams as a guest star.
Gotham City Sirens: Unfit for Orbit #3 by Leah Williams and Haining. Despero has separated Harley, Ivy, and Selina from each other, and revealed his plan to conquer the Earth. While the stakes are a bit over the top, the story is well-paced, and there’s real horror inside his ship.
Huge Detective #5 by Adam Rose and Magenta King. I’ll let Patton Oswalt describe it: "It’s fantastic! Noir, homicide, and giants. A weird mash-up that absolutely works!” Seriously, it’s one of the most original comics I’ve read in a long time. A young FBI agent works with a 50 foot tall giant to solve a murder that may re-ignite a war between the humans and giants.
Krypto: the Last Dog of Krypton #2 by Ryan North and Mike Norton. Teenaged Lex Luthor is a sociopath, and yet North makes him just sympathetic enough to make him both horrifying and fascinating. I wasn’t expecting a lot from this title, but I should have known better.
Money Shot: Comes Again! #1 by Tim Seeley and Gisèle Lagacé. A sex comedy about a group of five scientists who build a spaceship called the Money Shot to travel to distant planets. They finance their endeavors by having sex with the aliens they meet and selling subscriptions to their streaming service. This is a surprisingly clever story, and I’ve always been a fan of Lagacé’s art. There’s a surprise cameo in the final page, the star of her own sex comedy comic from the 1980s.

#Comics I read today: Sensational She-Hulk V1 #13 Star Trek: Lower Decks #8 Supergirl V8 #3 Trinity: Daughter of Wonder Woman #2 Uncanny X-Men V6 #17 Zatanna V3 #4

Sensational She-Hulk V1 #13. Jen and Weezy go for a winter vacation, but find a small town living in fear. The story by Steve Gerber is fine. The art by Bryan Hitch and Jim Sanders III is fine. It lacks the fourth wall breaking cleverness of John Byrne. Mostly I’m just marking time until he returns.
Star Trek: Lower Decks #8. Written by Tim Sheridan, art by Robby Cook. A flashback to when Carol Freeman was an ensign and had to rescue her crew from Romulans, complicated by Dr. Pulaski, as ranking officer on board, taking command of the ship. Again, okay but not great.
Supergirl V8 #3. Lesla-Lar has brainwashed everyone in Midvale into thinking she’s Supergirl, and the town refers to Kara as “Phonygirl”. But they love Phonygirl anyway. Also good stuff with Lena Luthor and Kara becoming real friends. Story and art by Sophie Campbell, and I’m liking it.
Trinity: Daughter of Wonder Woman #2. Three Elizabeth Princesses (daughter of Wonder Woman) from different timelines work together to try to catch all the various Damian Waynes and Jon Kents who have been turned into corgis. As one of the Lizzies says, it’s a whole thing. Middle Lizzie recruits Jason Todd to help her. She starts to fall for him, despite knowing he’s going to be killed by the Joker. Funny, but sad, too. Good art by Belén Ortega, and I’m a big fan of Tom King as a writer.
Uncanny X-Men V6 #17. A new slasher movie about a mutant serial killer called Murder Me, Mutina! is all the rage. The Outliers, the young group of mutants being mentored by the Louisiana X-Men, go to see it, and don’t like what they see. Gail Simone proves why she’s one of the very best writers in the business. Excellent art by Luciano Vecchio as well.
Zatanna V3 #4. Zatanna’s battle with Allura and Brother Night takes second seat to her battle with herself. Good story and art by Jamal Campbell.

#Comics I read today: Krypto: The Last Dog of Krypton #1 Magik #7 Pep Comics #67, 68, 73, 74

Krypto: The Last Dog of Krypton #1. Another Ryan North story, so it’s good.
Magik #7. Dani’s Society of the Eternal Dawn is holding a young mage named Cal whom the demon Liminal is trying to possess, and Illyana is not happy about it. I’m enjoying this one more than I thought I would.
Pep Comics #67, 68, 73, 74. Numbers 69 through 72 haven’t been released. I’m guessing Archie Comics doesn’t have suitable copies to digitize? These are from 1948/9. The principal artist is Bill Vigoda. Each issue has early Li’l Jinx 6-pagers by Joe Edwards (when her dad’s name was still Bill Bubblegum rather than Hap Holiday.) Bill Woggon has his usual Katy Keen fashion comic, as well as a western comic about a federal Marshall named Nevada Jones. It’s fascinating to see these pre-Dan DeCarlo comics, and see just how profoundly he would change Archie Comics.
