books i've finished lately. what i thought of them in the alt text

the cover of "shrinks: the untold story of psychiatry'. this was good, taking each stage in the last hundred years and describing the key drivers and characteristics of it. however, i read his schizophrenia one first and a lot of material is lifted wholesale from one to the other. got a bit in the weeds at times with drugs names and researcher affiliations.

the cover of the highly aclaimed "the center cannot hold." a very intense listen. i imagine i would have liked it better if i had read it rather than listen bc the narrator had a boomer inflection that grated. (even though the writer herself was a boomer. whatever) it's very inspiring as another person with schizophrenia to read all that she accomplished amid such great tribulations, considering 90% of schizophrenics are unemployed and she's a law professor, but on a personal level our experiences of the disease are entirely different, so it fell a little flat for me personally that way. i swear i do more than complain about things.

the cover of "everything is tuberculosis" by john green. engaging, humanizing, inspiring a sense of urgency, hopeful. eye-opening. i did not know that 1 in 7 people dies of tuberculosis, a disease that's been curable for about 70 years. henry is a captivating figure and i'm glad he's doing well. john green tells his story with compassion and heart.

the cover of "malady of the mind: schizophrenia and the path to prevention". i appreciated the thorough history of care for the "insane" over time. a proportionate amount of time is spent zooming in on the decades since the 50s when schizophrenia went from being a life sentence to wretched institutionalization and decline to treatable, and all the advancements since then. i could have used clearer descriptions of the overall trajectory of the disease on average (more than "it depends. on what? who knows") but I've listened on loop to the brain chemistry chapters trying -- and somewhat succeeding to -- understand. so far the best book on schizophrenia i've encountered (of like...four) and the author's deep care for the subject is apparent.
