Looks like a good signal for this week's @popshopradio.bsky.social via WRMI 5950, but it did drop off a bit during the digital data segment. Looking forward to hearing Lawrence Welk's take on Green Tambourine, lol.

Ray Stevens-Mr Businessman
Monument 45-1083 (USA 🇺🇸 ) 1968

Ray Stevens, is an Grammy Award winning singer, songwriter and comedian. He was born in Clarkdale, Georgia, near the city of Atlanta. He attended college as a business major, but switched to music before dropping out to pursue his musical interests.

Signing to Prep records in 1957 at age 18, he released his first single, a country/ rockabilly song called Silver Bracelet. It, and subsequent singles failed to chart. It wasn't until 1961 that he cracked the Hot 100 with his novelty record Jeremiah Peabody's Polyunsaturated Quick-Dissolving Fast-Acting Pleasant-Tasting Green and Purple Pills on Mercury records, a song that had the longest title to ever hit the Hot 100.

While he is well known for his hit novelty records such as Ahab the Arab, Gitarzan and The Streak, Ray Stevens also had a serious side. His 1968 recording of Mr Businessman is a satirical take on the rat-race that drives the greed of big business. While the record cracked the top 30 in the USA and top 10 in Canada, it is rarely heard on oldies radio perhaps due to the bean counting businessmen who run corporate radio today.

Chart Action:
US Hot 100 🇺🇸 : #28
Canada 🇨🇦 : #7
Australia 🇦🇺 : #33

This week's @popshopradio.bsky.social image decode, with Freddy Fender Fun Facts! A great lineup of music, and the signal seemed good so I'll listen later. There used to be a "Crazy Cajun" restaurant in Gulf Shores but it's long since gone. I'm sure the name was in no way connected to this label.

Freddy Fender–Dias y Noches Perdidas (Wasted Days and Wasted Nights)
Crazy Cajun CC-2011 (USA 🇺🇸 ) 1975

Freddy Fender was born in 1947 in the town of San Benito in Texas. He became well known in the 1970s as a country & western singer, but his career as a Tejano singer goes back many years prior to that.

His first public performance was on radio station KGBT in 1947. After time in the U S Marines, he played in nightclubs & bars to a mostly Latino audience. By 1957 he was making records using the nickname "El Bebop Kid", recording Spanish language versions of American rock'n'roll hits. He achieved success in Central & South America.

In 1959, he wrote & recorded Wasted Days and Wasted Nights. This early version was a minor hit in Texas & was picked up for national distribution. Success was short lived as Freddy & members of his group were arrested for marijuana possession and spent 3 years in prison.

Upon release he sang as Scotty Wayne, still playing in small venues, but by the end of the decade was working as a mechanic.

In 1974 he achieved national success with "Before the Next Teardrop Falls" a #1 hit on the Billboard Country & Pop charts. The follow-up, a remake of "Wasted Days and Wasted Nights, also went to #1 on the Billboard Country chart. It was also recorded in Spanish as you heard on this show.

Freddy passed away in 2006 of lung cancer.
