Mearsheimer has been disproven by reality as clearly as a doomsday prophet but somehow some people’s brains broke so hard over his Ukraine stance that there are still debates raging on Twitter with many claiming he is correct. 🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️

Mearsheimer: Western security integration of Ukraine would lead to Ru invasion because Ru is afraid and won't accept more NATO enlargement. Reality: Ukraine was *not* integrated, Ru invaded anyway then left its own borders w NATO undefended and accepted more enlargement…

I hear you, but lots of people need to be convinced that normal diplomacy isnt going to lead to peace no matter how hard or how competently it’s conducted. And that requires showing them what the evidence suggests each actor’s goal is.

Seems self-evident but very significant distinction of #Putin's and #zelenskyy's vision of peace, the former seeking Ukrainian capitulation and the latter negotiations. Putin can very easily have peace, he just needs to stop bombing #ukraine and withdraw his troops.

Silly incoherent response. Shame on you for dunking on a country defending itself

Good point. This would be the just and legal end. But Ukraine has already accepted that it might not happen soon so they want at least a ceasefire so they can explore and unjust but minimally acceptable solution. Putin rejects consistently

He’s farther than ever from achieving this, but that’s why he wants control over the Ukr state and capitulation, so the Russian state Russify everyone— through murder, forced labour, deportations, and indoctrination

Not even simply the resources. You could say he’s obsessed w taking Ukraine’s soul. It’s dramatic wording but what he wants is Ukrainians to abandon their distinctive identity and accept his view of them as a branch of the Russian nation…

It’s about much more than land though. If there was even the slightest indication peace was possible with only surrendering the occupied territories, negotiation would be possible. But it’s clear Putin wants all of Ukraine, original goals, capitulation. And that’s what Trump calls peace too

Absolutely all is true and the harshness is fully appropriate. My quibble is only that it requires Ze to choose between dignity and possibly enraging Trump even more.

When Trump says Zelensky accepts ceasefire proposals but doesn’t really want peace he means “Ze doesn’t want to surrender”. Yes, Ze wants to negotiate not capitulate. When he says Pu does want peace even though he rejects ceasefires— yes, Pu wants Ukr capitulation and nothing short of it.

Trump's complaints about Zelensky/Ukraine and his insistence that he wants peace make sense with reality ONLY if we accept that he defines "peace" the exact same way Putin does-- as Ukrainian capitulation to Russian control.

It’s a fair question, of course, but it does give additional fodder to Trump’s hatred for Ukraine. I see it a bit as outsourcing harsh words to Ze. I think it’s better and it would achieve the exact same goal to pose these questions to Trump first. I rarely hear journalists being so blunt with him.

I have no doubt that a bunch of Zelensky's epic responses are going into the history books and this one might make the cut. Still, I wish Western journalists didn’t use him as a foil to express their criticism of Trump. Speak bravely to Trump, ask HIM this same question.

AfD’s leader is deeply dishonest. Zelensky has accepted every ceasefire proposal even though it represents a huge compromise-- letting russians remain in control of the Ukrainian territories they hold. Zelensky is also a priori committed to peace-- he never started a war to begin with!

🇫🇷 France has something to lose: Zelenskyy responds to Le Pen regarding her promise to halt funding to Ukraine. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy noted that the experience of the Ukrainian army on the battlefield is valuable for French defense companies, therefore, supporting Kyiv is mutually beneficial

This is a ridiculous, bad faith response that strawmans the post. Ukraine also has common murderers and burglars you know, does that make them not the good guys IN THE WAR? Also, if you knew anything about the scale of Russian corruption, you wouldnt dare post this. I won’t be engaging anymore.

Despite the country’s steady progress fighting corruption, even in wartime, skeptics warn it’s not enough. But this is just an excuse. Their real concern is how Putin’s Russia would respond.

A reminder that Ukraine are the good guys defending themselves and trying to survive. Literally nothing in the current shitstorm is Ukraine or Zelensky’s fault. Anyone dissecting Zelensky’s words/strategy to find faults has either hopelessly lost the forest from the trees or is doing it in bad faith

Every move Trump has made in the last few days is purely anti-Ukrainian. It's not a negotiation and it has nothing to do with energy prices, with a peace process, or with Zelensky's attitude.

Any and every pro-russian move can be justified as a carrot in a future peace negotiation. Stop treating this obvious obfuscation as good faith efforts. Trump already proved that he doesn't want to negotiate peace but to force Ukraine to surrender to russian demands! www.reuters.com/world/europe...

For some maybe it’s just that, but many sure seem invested in the hatred. I literally had to block a guy with all sorts of humanist/equality/liberation nice words in the bio who came to my post to gloat that now Ukrainians are punished for having accepted help from the empire.

Trump denied the US has stopped intelligence sharing w Ukraine. Hopefully it’s because he knows it’s a super unpopular move he may not be able to keep up. If he thinks a 3 day suspension would cause Ukraine to capitulate to whatever he demands, he’s as clueless as Putin about Ukraine’s resolve.

I mean, of course it isnt their top concern but their knee-jerk reaction is to dismiss or hate Ukraine. I agree about the nationalism part but that’s also baked into the hatred for bourgeois democracy. Their pet causes are fighting for liberation but Ukrainians are fighting for “ethno-nationalism”

I gotta say nobody is falling for Trump’s tall tales about a great diesel deal to benefit Americans, a diplomatic strategy to restart peace talks, and the bad Zelensky who doesn’t want peace. Everyone understands what’s going on— Trump is helping Russia and trying to force Ukraine to surrender.
