Whether it is unchecked A.I. replacing nurses, hospital execs pulling 8-figure salaries while patients crowdfund their care, or people rationing insulin while big pharma posts record profits; this isn't left vs right. It's the ultra-wealthy vs everyone else.

screenshot from article: It is often the insurers, not the therapists, that determine who can get treatment, what kind they can get and for how long. More than a dozen therapists said insurers urged them to reduce care when their patients were on the brink of harm, including suicide.

All the while, providers struggled to stay in business as insurers withheld reimbursements that sometimes came months late. Some spent hours a week chasing down the meager payments, listening to hold music and sending faxes into the abyss.

Therefore, UHC's denial of this procedure, putting her stem cell transplant off for weeks or more as they go through the denial process, threatened her life. (4/6)

She would not be able to get the needed stem cell transplant until the wound was healed, and the timeline was very tight to give her the best chance of survival possible. (3/6)
Twitter image text: "While we fight to get this appealed, I’m reminded of the vast support system we have. Friends and family have offered their support to help us if we have to foot the bill, which can be up to $90,000. I’m eternally grateful for the support. It also makes me think of how close you are to the brink in this country.

We have a one-bedroom apartment, double income, no kids. By all measure, we are ahead of the curve financially for our age. And yet, one medical diagnosis threatens to wipe out all we have made for ourselves.

My heart breaks thinking about those with less means. Those with less of a support system, less income, no insurance. Stuck with a five-figure bill for the privilege of survival. No way out." Twitter image text: "It’s a stark reminder how close we all are to being thrown out on the street. You could have a cushy six-figure job, a stable and hopeful life, and an arbitrary decision made by a corporation ruins your life. All wiped out in the name of shareholder value. Reminded that you aren’t a person with aspirations for life, you are a number on a spreadsheet to the ruling class.

Today it’s us. Tomorrow it could be you. Never forget who has the boot on your neck."

Charlie's financée, Kelsey Martin, had started treatment for lymphoma after a recurrence earlier in the year. Part of that treatment included prior surgery on her neck, which left an open wound that needed to be closed by a wound care specialist. (2/6)
Twitter image text: My Fiancée and I are four months into her cancer treatment. Since this is a recurrence, the treatment options are complex and less than certain, requiring lots of appointments, procedures, and the great arbiter of American healthcare, insurance pre-authorization.

Due to an excision performed on her neck, she was left with an open wound. Before undergoing a stem cell transplant, the wound has to be closed. A wound care specialist and her primary oncology specialist both agreed on this. A referral was made to a plastic surgeon to close the wound, and the procedure was scheduled for today, with a tight two-week recovery window before her transplant."Tweet image text: "While sitting in the waiting room, we were told that insurance denied the procedure. They gave no reason. My best guess, they saw “plastic surgeon” and reflexively denied it. The surgeon is furious, her care team is furious, and I’m left with a rage that can only be described as homicidal. Heads, spikes, that sort of thing.

Her treatment was scheduled to start tomorrow. Now it’s being pushed back until this can be resolved, meaningfully altering her chances of survival. She agreed to the treatment, all of her doctors agreed it was the best course of action, and United Healthcare decided to say no."

Wow, what an honor I will never forget - speaking on the steps of the NYS Capitol building surrounded by hundreds of medical professionals, advocates, caregivers, and patients to fight for the NY HEALTH ACT - a bill that would replace private insurance in NYS with a single payer system that covers ANYONE living in NY regardless of employment status, immigration status, race, gender identity, etc. Simply put, healthcare would center CARE, the way it should be and already is in EVERY other developed nation in the world. Please read up on it and have a conversation about it. The people united can never be defeated.
