Philadelphia, PA — Today, Pennsylvania State Representative Malcolm Kenyatta issued the following statement condemning the arrest of Newark Mayor Ras Baraka by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE):

“This is outrageous. The arrest of Mayor Ras Baraka—an elected official standing up for the people he was elected to serve—is a blatant abuse of power.

This was not about enforcing the law. It was about silencing protest, punishing leadership, and sending a message to those who dare to speak out. Mayor Baraka was doing what every public servant should be doing: defending his community.

ICE targeting a sitting mayor for his advocacy is not just unacceptable—it’s un-American. It’s an attack on Black leadership, on the right to protest, and on the core democratic principle that government should answer to the people, not suppress them.

I stand with Mayor Baraka. We all should. Because if they can come for him, they can come for any of us.”
