NYC was only just coming out of covid restrictions so was essentially the only tourist in the entire city. I had Time Square to myself. One day, on a whim, I rode the F all the way to Coney Island, which was closed. One of the best two weeks of my entire life, and the F-train was at the heart of it.

The acts of a few private foreigners do not make it pro-confederate. The work of local historian Eric Scott Lynch has resulted in plaques being installed to acknowledge the city's links to the horrors of slavery. Rather than hide from our history, we are staring it squarely in the eyes.

Sir William Brown 1784-1864
Cotton merchant, banker, philanthropist & slave owner.

Liverpool's central library and world museum have their origins in wealth accrued through slavery. William Brown became one of the main importers of slave-produced cotton into Liverpool. The Brown family also owned many enslaved people on their plantations in the US. William Brown Street was named after him for funding these buildings.

Every year, we say, "Bloody hell, it's hot. Let's get an AC unit next year," and then forget about it because it's only actually two days a year that the temperature reaches 80 degrees. Those two days were last Thursday and Friday. Today, it is 68 degrees max in my city. 72 max next week.
