It's the time of year for goldenrod here, which brings great purple hairstreak butterflies out of the tree-tops. This is a frontal view of one, which reminds me of standing in front of a jet aircraft. Compare to a profile. #butterflies #pollinators #bugsky #ECK #insects #wildlife #nature 🌎🦋

A frontal view of a great purple hairstreak butterfly showing the the ornaments attached to their tails, which one can guess are distractions for predators. Perched on yellow goldenrod flowers with a green background.

Yes, but they’re rather drab when the wings are raised, which likely the whole point.

Despite being neglected, this drift rose bloomed this week. #rose #bllomscrolling #flowers #garden 🌹🥀 These flowers seem to change color as they age.

It looks like fall is a wonderful time of year there! 🍁🍂

They are more wary than some other butterflies. Maybe on a cool morning ?

I rarely squash a bug. Limited to inside only.

Always good to have around!

This beneficial monster is a juvenile Ladybug (ladybeetle-ladybird, depending on where you're from). There are 98 species in the state where I live, so I'm not even guessing which one this is . #ladybug #bugsky #insects #nature #wildlife #inverts #ECK

Thank you Helen. Strictly no zoom and the butterfly allowed me to approach to within a few cm.

Normally not all that apparent, but the angle of the sun allowed it to be displayed

While hunting bumblebees, I noticed a soldier beetle allowing a closeup. #beetles #bugsky #insects #macro #inverts #nature #wildlife #ECK

One is from the morning glory family and the other is a hibiscus.

Thanks, there are so many now that I stopped taking pics.

Long-tailed skippers are frequently seen now, often displaying or chasing each other. This one was on the native plant, wild coffee #skippers #pollinators #bugsky #butterflies #insects #ECK 🦋 #macro 🌿

Yes, there’s a big batch if them in my yard and they’re a bee and butterfly magnet. Next up are the climbing asters, which will bloom for the rest of the year.

Watching right now and it’s fabulous!

Thanks so much! I don’t really like to press my luck getting so close to honeybees, but this one seemed occupied. I don’t worry about getting stung by bumblebees at all.

Jim 🇺🇦 @pom137.bsky.social · 23/09/2026

I'm still trying to document all of the native bees that show up in my yard, but I ran across a western honeybee that was so focused on it's work that it let me take a shot with no zoom. #macro #honeybees #pollinators #bugsky #nature #bees #inverts #insects #ECK 🐝

Thanks Linareed! They are very patient creatures

Jim 🇺🇦 @pom137.bsky.social · 22/09/2026

I thought I recognized that! It’s a Jatropha species. I have one in my yard. It dies back after a freeze, but returns each spring. The only potential pollinator I’ve ever seen on it was a hoverfly.

Jim 🇺🇦 @pom137.bsky.social · 21/09/2026

Thanks so much Jan! I agree. They very easy to deal with and I welcome them to my yard at all life stages

I gave seen bees asleep on flowers early in the morning!
