Saw a guy wearing ESD safe birkenstocks at work today. I aspire to that level of drip
A classic Birkenstock sandal, except it had a yellow button on it with the ESD logo and what looks like metal rivets in the insole

That moon gave me one of the best moonrises I’ve ever seen yesterday. It was right at sunset and we were out looking at fall aspen leaves. The pic obviously does not do it justice!
The moon rising over a mountainside while the sky is pink from sunset. There’s a dirt road, and metal buildings and cars are off to the right.

"The PicoIDE will never work on the B&W G3" - Ian Scott, September 25, 2026 "The PicoIDE works fine on the B&W G3 with an OpenFirmware workaround" - Ian Scott, September 26, 2026
A Blue & White Apple Power Macintosh G3 in the classic Bondi Blue color, opened up with its guts out. Two PicoIDEs are plugged into it, one into the HDD interface, and the other one meant for the optical/ZIP drives.

Post-VCF letdown: getting the retro space under control. I let things get too messy during VCF prep and brought back a lot from the show so now I need to figure out where things can go so I can see my floor again!
A cluttered basement space full of old computers and boxes of computer junk. Help, I’m drowning in it!

They were great! I bought so much slightly obsolete stuff there. I found one of their stickers recently and stuck it on my sticker bombed set of drawers.

An amazing thing some of you may not have seen this past weekend at #vcfmw: bytex64’s MFM drive emulator. He got it up and running on Sunday and the speaker on it for drive activity sounds great!
An early laptop in beige, with a purple PCB connected to it via a ribbon cable coming out of a drive bay on the side of the computer.

Another VCF Midwest #vcfmw highlight: taking a van load of stuff to put on the free pile on behalf of @jeremysretrobar.bsky.social. Almost everything I put on the pile was picked up within seconds of me putting it down. There’s two more layers of stuff beyond what you can see in this photo
The back hatch of a minivan with several classic Macintoshes, quite a few gray box era Dells, an IBM MDA monitor, and two flat panel Apple displays.

One of my favorite moments from #vcfmw this year was when @thegirlg33k.com let me test picoide out on her PC-9821 and do some IDE bus captures. After some shenanigans with drive geometry it booted right up off the picoide! And CD works too! Thanks again for letting me crash your table 😅

Hey folks! #VCFMW #VCFMW2026 is in a week and a half! I'll be at table B206 showing off PicoIDE and PicoGUS on various systems and just hanging out. See ya there! And boy that is a lot of tables!
A plan of hundreds of tables arranged into 23 different pods or lines. The title says Vintage Computer Festival Midwest 21 Table Guide. A red star is over my table.

Got the PicoIDE and BlueSCSI installed into the SGI VW 320 to demo at VCF Midwest in a couple weeks! I love the auto opening door on this thing.

Officially the dumbest/most fun thing that I've tested PicoIDE on: a controller kit that turns a CD-ROM drive into a standalone CD player

VCF Midwest is a bit over 2 weeks away so I’m getting PicoIDE demo rigs set up for my table. One will be an SGI Visual Workstation 320 with both a BlueSCSI Ultra Wide and a PicoIDE in way-too-cool black front panel enclosures. These are 3d printed because I’ve only gotten molded samples in beige
Two 3.5” drives in very similar black plastic enclosures, one with picoIDE embossed into the front and the other saying BlueSCSI

Getting together a PicoIDE demo setup for VCF Midwest and for fun I think I'll use my SGI Visual Workstation 320. Quake, Quake II, and Half-Life run great! Anyone know any other fun OpenGL games from the late 90s? The SGI graphics on this machine can't do Direct3D, which is a fun limitation.
A swoopy large tower case with the side open and its guts spilling out - ribbon cables and both a PicoIDE and a BlueSCSI connected to it. The beginning of Half-Life 1 is on the screen.

the founder at an early job of mine mine coded python in stock vi with no auto formatting or syntax highlighting and hand indented everything, with varying indentation to keep things lined up. it was hell collaborating with him. it looked like this:
Python code that says:

if foo == bar:
   baz()

while True:
      quux()

def func():

The closest mall to where I grew up is now torn down, but amazingly someone on Flickr took a photo of the former Babbage's when the mall was in its "dead mall" state. Those windows had screens where I saw Wing Commander and heard a Sound Blaster for the first time. My life was changed in this spot.
An empty mall storefront. The entrance has a closed gate over it. You can see the ghost of the "Babbage's" sign above it. There are glass windows on the right that jut out.

Your eyes do not deceive you! The cat's out of the bag: I've been collaborating with the @bluescsi.com project to make the enclosure and front panel originally designed for PicoIDE common to both! I collabed with @eric.scsi.blue on code and @gutbomb.net did the 3D design. jcm-1.com/product/blue...

I love where I live. And my dog.
It’s golden hour. In the foreground is medium black dog, semi-silhouetted in front of the sun about to set behind mountains in the far distance. Closer in is the calm water of a lake.

Oh cool! Speaking of NASA, I always thought the bicentennial logo looked good on the VAB.

There’s only one #PicoIDE in this computer… I got dual device support working this weekend! That means everyone who backed PicoIDE on Crowd Supply will be getting a bit of a bonus when they finally get theirs! I’ll be releasing a campaign update soon with the latest status on manufacturing.

The next morning on the way to the airport I stopped at Re-PC’s Kent location. They had a lot of great stuff, old and new! Prices a bit high but relatively fair.
A table with several iMacs and a CRT Studio Display. Lots of other computers are around too, like some TI 99/4as in the background An Atari ST 520 connected to a CRT. It’s not on yet but they turned it on later, and it was working great. An AT clone case on a shelf. The price tag says “ATX style case” and it’s $100. Not actually ATX, and it’s not in great shape, but ok.

I then went back the the VCF event and got up to some Unix shenanigans on @adriansdigitalbasement.com’s Plexus P/20 and after the show watched a Commodore SX-64 get wired on in the hotel lobby.
A terminal connected to the Plexus. I and another person are using the “banner” and “wall” commands to annoy each other. The last two exchanges are “nice hat” and “*tips hat*”A beat up looking Commodore 64 with two space bars for some reason. The second one is above the keyboard. I then went up to Snoqualmie Falls, which was also ridiculously pretty. If it looks familiar, it’s the site of the fictional Great Northern Hotel from Twin Peaks
Selfie of me in front of the falls, which are flowing pretty well. A lodge that looks like it’d be great to stay in is perched on the cliff next to the falls. Closer view of the lodge

I also went to Ada’s Technical Books, Pino Gorilla Games, and drove around some neighborhoods with ridiculously pretty views (it was sunny with clear skies the whole time I was there, BTW)

The next day I took a break from the VCF show and visited the Connections Museum. What a place!! I’ve watched their YouTube channel for a while.
A relatively open area of the Connections Museum, which is in a phone company central office. Racks of equipment go all the way up to the ceiling. Sarah, the head engineer, is high up on a ladder fixing something. The ladder can glide back and forth which was really cool. More very tall racks, this time with a Panel Machine Switching System which dates back to 1915!Someone using a 1960s era videophone. It has a black and white CRT in a relatively compact enclosure. The video quality was surprisingly good!A Stowger switching system. Gray cylinders which hold the switches line the wall.

Day one at the VCF event. It was crowded!
 A room with a lot of people and old computers in it. In the foreground are several black and white terminals where people are logged into and playing a MUD running on a MicroVAXOne of the terminals - a Hazeltine 1500. This one is close to my heart as I used one to log into BBSes when I was grounded from the family computer. A friend helped me sneak it into my room. An Apricot F1, a very compact computer with a green monochrome screen. It is very cool looking in my opinion - the computer is pretty small and the keyboard and trackball have a very futuristic look.

The ICM has a Thinking Machines CM-2!! And even more amazing stuff! And most of it is working in some fashion!
Me, who can hardly believe he’s touching a Connection Machine (the CM-2, from 1987). It’s a “friend sized” computer made of 8 cubes, all of which have matrixes of red LEDs, each one representing a processor in the machineThe control panel of the CM-2, with buttons and knobs cryptically labeled as α, δ, β, γStephen Jones operating the front panel switches of a DEC PDP-7, a computer about the size of two refrigerators. The panels are open, revealing the wire wrapped interior. Adrian Black is standing next to it. The screen and keyboard of a Symbolics XL400 Lisp machine. It’s a very large and high resolution screen for its time. It’s showing the startup screen for the Symbolics Genera 8.3 operating system. The keyboard has fun keys like square, circle, and triangle

I went to Seattle for #vcfpnw last weekend and it was pretty great! A thread of pictures (read the alt text for extra commentary detail, btw!), starting with a visit to the Interim Computer Museum
A small warehouse like area with a cream/brown Digital Decsystem 20 with lots of stickers. Next to it is a blue DEC PDP-10.A Seattle Computer Products Gazelle, a “deskside” minicomputer. It’s pretty big compared to the IBM 5150 on the desk next to it. This is one of the computers SCP originally wrote 86-DOS for, which became MS-DOSA keyfob with the Centurion computers logo on it. It’s on a key ring with the key inserted into a Centurion minicomputer The same warehouse environment, with the PDP-10’s doors open. Lots of people are standing around. Shelves with even more vintage computers, terminals, and other parts are stacked high on the room’s walls
