Marco Rogers @polotek.bsky.social · 09/10/2026Worth saying explicitly. When we're talking about the US, we've never been a right society. America's entire foundation is built on a hierarchy of rights and freedoms. This is the America that has always been. And that's different from treating this like a new problem. bsky.app/profile/behi... 0204

Marco Rogers @polotek.bsky.social · 09/10/2026I don't have a case on it. I have an android, and nobody gives a shit about them, so the cases are usually pretty plain and uninteresting. So my upgrade cycle is usually how damaged is the phone and is it worth getting repaired vs just buying a new one. 160

Marco Rogers @polotek.bsky.social · 29/09/2026I say all this to say that you should expect Meta to take every opportunity to steal as much data as they can. As soon as I saw that Muse was from Meta, it was a hard no for me. And here we are. With them proving me right yet again. 0218
Marco Rogers @polotek.bsky.social · 29/09/2026Meta tried to get your texts by getting you to switch to Whatsapp. That didn't really work. Maybe they can get at SMS some kinda way, but Apple said nah. Within our platform, we lock things down even further. So Meta sent in a trojan horse that can access iMessage through backchannels. 161
Marco Rogers @polotek.bsky.social · 29/09/2026All Meta wants to do with AI is convince you to give them more ways to exploit you. Just like they did with Muse. You've got a helpful assistant, but that assistant is also hoovering up your private data. New data sources that Meta wanted but didn't have access to before. 1131
Marco Rogers @polotek.bsky.social · 29/09/2026Facebook doesn't just offer an advertising platform. They offer a way for anonymous third parties to put their messages in front of you at any time. You have no idea how things end up in your Facebook feed. That's because it's not based on what you want. It's based on what someone else paid for. 190
Marco Rogers @polotek.bsky.social · 29/09/2026Meta is on the other end of the spectrum. Their business model is they will give anyone else full access to your data. They don't care what people do with it as long as they get paid. Do some advertising, start a genocide, whatever. They have proven over and over that they have no boundaries. 1122
Marco Rogers @polotek.bsky.social · 29/09/2026Google doesn't want to give your data away. But they do wanna set up their AI so it is the only one with access to your private data. Just as an example, their pitch is that they're the only ones that should have your email. So they are the best solution for AI that accesses your email. 190
Marco Rogers @polotek.bsky.social · 29/09/2026Google usually has some incentive towards data privacy because they won big with email. That's something where people expect high security and privacy. And they sell it to companies too, so they can't fuck around. But AI is rapidly causing conflicting incentives for them. 1120
Marco Rogers @polotek.bsky.social · 29/09/2026Google falls somewhere in-between Apple and Meta in my mind. Google sells eyeballs to advertisers. They do that by providing things you want for free in exchange for knowing more about you. And they want to *own* that data. They want to be the only ones that have it so they are the gatekeeper. 1120
Marco Rogers @polotek.bsky.social · 29/09/2026That's also partly why they're "behind" on AI. Apple has a culture of preserving data security to an absurd degree. They're trying to figure out how to maintain that posture with this reckless LLM technology and they're having a hard time. 2200
Marco Rogers @polotek.bsky.social · 29/09/2026Apple has a strong incentive to be a good steward of your data privacy. What they sell is a feeling to mostly affluent people that they have a trustworthy service. It's a "closed" ecosystem. It's part of why Apple can charge a premium and people still pay. 1191
Marco Rogers @polotek.bsky.social · 29/09/2026When I have this conversation, someone usually mentions that we give Apple and Google a lot of our data too. That's true. We tend to talk about whether you can "trust" these companies. But I think it's more useful to talk about incentives. Who has the *incentive* to screw you over. 2243
Marco Rogers @polotek.bsky.social · 29/09/2026Meta wants your data so they can exploit it. Whatever else they're talking about, that is always their motivation. In any context. You don't have to think hard about it. If it's a question of giving Zuck your data, the answer should always be hell no. 24313
Marco Rogers @polotek.bsky.social · 29/09/2026Again, I will keep saying that it doesn't have to be this way. I believe we *could* have ai assistants that are more secure. But that's not what's happening. Not because they're fundamentally bad, but because the people building them don't want that. 24518
Marco Rogers @polotek.bsky.social · 29/09/2026I can understand why the features of a supposed AI assistant are compelling. I kinda wanna try it too. But I know too much about how these things work. Do not give a cloud-based agent access to your shit. Especially one from the big tech companies. 513554
