I wrote this poem when I was 11, having been stuck for hours until my mum said “a rebel is a pebble”. I remember everyone being very pleased with it, and my teacher insisting it went in the school magazine. Found it again today. It isn’t, in fact, very good.

Happy New Year. Spending it with family we attempted the Ecuadorean tradition of my in laws, burning a guy made of old clothes. The children made a tiny Putin. 45 minutes later I smell of acrid smoke and have concluded that children’s clothes are impressively flame retardant.

My son has invented a game called mega chess, played on a 16x16 board. We have made the pieces, which include a camel and a baker. Now we just need to find out if it’s playable. I love the confidence of 10 year olds.
