Efforts by the initiative Hela Rosengård Röstar (through its democracy guides), the local library, and the local mosque were also important. All this and more will now be analyzed further!"

While there is little doubt that fear of the Swedish Democrats affected voters in Rosengård, other factors must also be considered. For instance, the Socialdemocrats were present on a daily basis in Rosengård Centrum, a place that is as much a community as a shopping center.

POLINERA @polinera.bsky.social · 21/09/2026
Both Socialdemocrats and Left Party increased their support among voters in Rosengård – and did so significantly. Combined, they gained the support of 95% of all voters in the 2026 national elections. Left Party increased its share of voters by an astonishing 28.6%; Socialdemocrats by 12.1%.

Preliminary results from Rosengård underscored that these parties had an effect. For example, voter turnout in the national elections increased from 54.04% in 2022 to 66.9% in 2026. In the municipal elections, 52.3% of residents in Rosengård voted in 2022; that figure rose to 66.2% in 2026.

The neighborhood of Rosengård in Malmö, home to around 30,000 residents representing (according to one of my informants) 180 different nationalities, is one of the sites where POLINERA conducts research to explore the effects of right-wing populist parties on migrant voters.

People – i.e., the residents of Rosengård – were definitely going to vote. They had seen what had happened over the last four years, and they feared what would happen if the Swedish Democrats (Sverigesdemokraterna) gained more power.

"When I asked people I met, interviewed, and chatted with in Rosengård in Malmö the days before the national, regional, and municipal elections (all taking place on the same day, 13 September, 2026) what they expected to happen during the elections, they all gave answers along the following lines:

"Their way of collecting garbage in the district is environmentally conscious (see photo). And the center has super Turkish coffee for 13 DKK! I am pleased with the input I get to the POLINERA in both Sweden and Denmark. The next step is the final coding of data, analysis - and article writing"

"It's interesting how differently things are done in Sweden and Denmark, respectively. A funny difference is that there are virtually no election posters here. On the other hand, the Social Democrats have rented an entire shop in Rosengård Centrum, where they meet the locals."⬇️

Albeit this was a short research project, and most of the students were conducting ethnographic research for the first time, the results were interesting: ☑️ There is no universal “good road”; rather, it emerges from local values and opportunities ☑️ Community activism and participation are crucial⬇️

One student group examined how sustainable renovation programmes are perceived by local residents and why some housing associations have chosen not to participate in them. The other group explored how local residents perceive the temporary pavilion of the Contemporary Art Museum in Lasnamäe.⬇️

Given that urban planning and the development of the urban environment are among the issues that concern Lasnamäe residents and often become salient during elections, we wanted to explore how such problems are addressed at the local level.⬇️

The students were asked to identify urban settings that generate contention and/or affect the everyday lives of Lasnamäe residents and to explore how these settings are perceived by local inhabitants. ⬇️
