Is it #Caturday already? Here's Pepper at the shelter, telling me she wanted to be my kitten.

But now little Kogsak is cut to shreds by the cat zombie's claws, and we have yet to construct a hospital ... #dwarffortress #FortressFriday

Kogsak is the daughter of our expedition leader, Sakzul Orbhail, and her husband, Avuz Columnflag. The cat zombie mauled the child, under Avuz stepped in to defend his daughter with his woodcutting axe and decapitated the zombie, laying it to rest. #dwarffortress

We had the drawbridge lowered to allow human traders in and out, and the cat slipped outside and into a cloud of vile ash. The fresh corpse of the cat returned to our home, and attacked everything it saw. The war dogs rushed in, but then a child, Kogsak Copperhours rushed in as well. #dwarffortress

The most important fortress amenity, however, is the great drawbridge at the entrance that protects us from the vile ash. Keeping it closed when we are not expecting traders is an important part of life in Bulwarkrough. But then, in the late summer of our third year, a cat escaped. #dwarffortress

With great caution, we began to grow underground crops and process them for food, booze and clothing. We built forges and smelters. There is both sand and fire clay near the volcano, so we built a glass furnace. Risking the vile ash, we carved out a farm for surface crops. #dwarffortress

The fortress mothers began to give birth, a reminder that life goes on even in this dangerous place. We slaughtered our water buffalo, determining that grazing beasts are too significant a danger, and when meat began to run low, also three of the war dogs. The cats hunt demon rats. #dwarffortress

Dodging vile ash clouds, we set up a rudimentary home, with beds in a dormitory, a trade depot, and a still. We tapped the volcano for magma to power our forges and furnaces, and cautiously collected water from the river to irrigate an underground farm. #dwarffortress

Therefore, we started a new fortress, Bulwarkrough, in a haunted swamp. The environment is inviting and beautiful - until the vile ash sweeps through. It changes every living thing it touches into a vile ash zombie. We quickly dug into the hillside and learned to watch the weather. #dwarffortress

It's #FortressFriday In Relicbreach, we conquered the elves, and breached many obsidian vaults in the caverns. Nothing special was discovered. Then we attacked a different goblin civilization. The rhythm of life became raid-raid-raid-defend from siege-raid-raid. Very monotonous. #dwarffortress

Today, only two sites remain to the Sensitive Waxes: Coalfin and Fangweaver. To replace our erstwhile trading partners, we have contacted another elven civ, the Nuts of Stabbing. Hopefully they will prove more tractable over time. Time will tell. #dwarffortress

Two war elephants died in the next ambush six months later, but not in vain, as they gave fair warning of the incoming elves, who were all put down by our in-house squads. Meanwhile, we relentlessly pillaged the forest retreats, and took over site after site. #dwarffortress

Unfortunately, the elves did eventually retaliate. While our squads are strong, they caught the Walled Gloves on their way out to raid and ambushed the rear guard. Adil and Solon were slain before the in-house squads could come to their rescue. Thereafter, we posted war elephants near the border.

Fortunately, we noticed their hostility before they ambushed us, and decided to ambush them first. We put together a fourth militia squad, a speardwarf squad called the Helmed Dents, and began to pillage the elven forest retreats. Elves and animals alike were slaughtered. #dwarffortress

It's #FortressFriday The Sensitive Waxes are an elven civilization. They brought us exotic animals and fruits for trade for more than 30 years, but after we conquered the goblins of the Evil of Gifting, they decided to go to war with us, but didn't bother to tell us first. #dwarffortress

Now the second cavern has been retaken, sealed off from the world, and lies open before us. It is ... a mess, to say the least. The carnage is real. But we must clean it up, lest the horrors of war grind down our citizens' minds. #dwarffortress

Zuglar was also lost in the cavern, but not to bat people. Armed with her trusty axe, she was assigned to cut some trees and a forgotten beast sprang upon her. She tried to run and tried to fight. The beast was slain, but not before it slew Zuglar. She was also carried to the catacombs with honor.

The Geared Stokers, a lasher squad; the Walled Gloves, armed with imported flails; and the Deer of Barricading, our hammerdwarf squad; all fought bravely and we won the day. But not at some cost: We lost Etur and Goden to the bat people, both of the Walled Gloves. Both we laid to rest with honors.

With three squads remaining (the Cobalt Gangs remained in Spidergoads), we cautiously re-opened the cavern and marched in to re-take it. Over three hundred bat people and their mounts, giant olms, giant toads, and giant cave swallows, resisted us. There in the dark depths, we fought them.

With the goblins vanquished and their sieges stopped, we turned our eyes downward once more. The second cavern was the site of unceasing skirmishes between bat people, cavern wildlife, and forgotten beasts. The carnage had reached an intolerable height. We had to do something about it.

Only four goblins remain of the Evil of Gifting, four snatchers who were captured in Relicbreach. One of them, Snodub Manymenaces, assumed the title of master. Snodub, caged, now adorns our tavern, taunted by the victorious dwarves of the Vigorous Standard. #dwarffortress

All told, only one dwarf died in the destruction of the Evil of Gifting: Inod Brassenjoyed, a hammerdwarf in the Deer of Barracading. Killed by Tedaz Mischiefsounded in the pits of Horrorrhyme, she was instantly avenged by her squadmate Tekkud Chaosclasped. Rest in peace, Inod.

The Cobalt Gangs, a lasher squad, armed with whips purchased from the humans and armored in steel, veterans all, marched into Spidergoads. The terrified goblins immediately folded, and produced the demon. Ral Anguishedtools, called the Walled Gleam of Fragments, beheaded the beast.

The dark fortress of Spidergoads, however, which was the seat of the Evil of Gifting, required a different tactic. Rather than attack the site, and draw out the annoyed master for combat, we sent a full squad of armored dwarves to demand surrender straight out of the gate.

Policy of Madness @policyofmadness.bsky.social · 04/01/2025
This method is shockingly effective at wearing down enemy civs quickly. Once a site ceases to resist, a single dwarf can take it by simply demanding the wearied goblins surrender the site. In this way, we conquered nine goblin pits and folded them into the Brushed Walls, our home civilization.

It's #FortressFriday We created four militia squads and they took turns drilling into the pits of the Evil of Gifting, a local goblin civilization. One pair of squads would attack two sites, then when they returned the other pair of squads would raid the same two sites. #dwarffortress

Slek fell to Kubuk, a green glass scorpion with a poisonous sting, but Kubuk was far more fragile than Slek, and fell in turn to the bat people that Slek had killed in their scores. Now nothing keeps the cavern dwellers under control.

Our second cavern was guarded a long time by Slek, the forgotten beast. A huge one-eyed ankylosaurid, it had nothing going for it but a poisonous bite! Yet it slew cavern critters in the hundreds, dispatching them with a kick to the head. Its feet rotting, it roamed the cavern, killing everything.

Welcome to #FortressFriday Not much happened this week! We finished our obsidian towers, and then started to say hello to our neighbors. Our neighbors considerately returned the greeting, and were subsequently baptized into the Holy Church of Armok. #dwarffortress
A long, underground switchback passageway, with green glass screw pumps at the bottom and fortifications all the way up. The passageway is dotted with a few specks of yet-to-dry magma, and iron goblinite.

In addition to several hillocks, Relicbreach controls three caves, formerly owned by kobolds. Kobolds kept showing up in hopes of stealing things, and eventually we got tired of this and started to conquer nearby caves until we found the correct one. The other two? Collateral damage. #dwarffortress

Policy of Madness @policyofmadness.bsky.social · 21/12/2024
Relicbreach's population is almost 115. When some hillocks were founded near the fortress, we requested workers from one of them, to provide new soldiers and new artisans. We have three full squads of militia now, and are thinking about the caverns still, sometimes. #dwarffortress

The current plan is to divert the excess magma off to the side to dry it out, and then, perhaps, do some machining of the obsidian casting system to forestall further errors of this type. No dwarves have been harmed, however. Yet. #dwarffortress

Policy of Madness @policyofmadness.bsky.social · 21/12/2024
There was a slight ... miscalculation with the obsidian casting the last time we attempted it, however, and now the floor is covered in magma that won't dry. We're going to have to fix that sometime very soon. #dwarffortress

It's #FortressFriday After giving up (temporarily!) on the caverns, we decided to build an above-ground tower complex. Why? Why ask why. We're building it out of obsidian, of course, and therefore needed large quantities of obsidian. #dwarffortress

As we explored the second cavern layer, we had two setbacks: a deep cavern lake that crossed the boundary of our embark area, and a web-slinging forgotten beast. The beast was trapped in a narrow corridor between mushrooms, and there seemed to be no way to safely reach it. #dwarffortress

Then when I need to make a serious decision, I write down pro/con lists of both options and weigh them once they are in black and white. Pro: high wages, Con: boring, etc. Include things like commute time, remote option, scrape the barrel. Then look at the lists with a clear mind.

Do you have another job lined up? And what does your resume look like? It doesn't look good to jump between jobs frequently, so if you don't have a long tenure somewhere previously, it may not be a great idea to jump to another job now.
