The #CorrectTheMap campaign thinks #Africa is the center of the world? 😆 #cartography #geography #GIS #Mercator #map #worldmap #maps #mapping

6. How can I spot a misleading map?

Look out for these clues:

Does Greenland look as big as Africa? That’s a red flag.
Is Africa near the center of the map, or pushed to the side?
Are countries near the equator unusually small?

Some news for cartographers, from the highly-sensationalized #CorrectTheMap campaign (Their mission to get rid of #Mercator-projection illustrative world maps is a good fight, but a lot of their rhetoric is very ill-informed/misleading.) #cartography #geography #GIS #worldmap #Africa #maps

5. What should we look for in a good world map?

There are two key rules:

Preserve area: Countries should appear in their correct size relative to one another.
Roundedness: The map should still look like a globe flattened gently—no wild stretching.

No map is perfect, but some are fairer. The Equal Earth, Gall-Peters, and other equal-area projections do a better job at showing the world truthfully.

Always interesting to be reminded that UN peacekeepers are soldiers from specific, faraway countries. Here's a recent UN map of the (former) #GolanHeights buffer zone in #Syria, now mostly held by #Israel, with #UNDOF peacekeepers mostly relegated to observation and liaising. #MENAsky #geography

For comparison, though our map of which countries are suspended from the #AfricanUnion hasn't been updated in three years, our humans labeled ALL the countries and didn't even get ONE wrong! 🤣 #AfricaMap #maps #Africa #geography #cartography www.polgeonow.com/2017/02/what...

Dear @washingtonpost.com: Three of the US's aircraft carriers have their home port within 12 miles of the border with #Mexico (in #SanDiego). Entering "waters near #LatinAmerica" is not the story here. Did you mean #SouthAmerica? #geography #geographyfail #factcheck #Venezuela

When @theipaper.com‬ blatantly plagiarized our #Israel/#Palestine control map (they apparently redrew it, but directly copied and pasted the notes and legend from ours). It's been almost a year without any response from them regarding our complaints. #plagiarism #journalism #graphics #cartography

In interesting show of restraint, #USA president's order to change "#GulfOfMexico" to "#GulfOfAmerica" on govt maps seems to specify that only the part under US jurisdiction is being renamed. (link in comment) #toponymy #geography #mapping #hydrology #UNCLOS #maritime #names
Screengrab of text reading "As such, within 30 days of the date of this order, the Secretary of the Interior shall, consistent with 43 U.S.C. 364 through 364f, take all appropriate actions to rename as the “Gulf of America” the U.S. Continental Shelf area bounded on the northeast, north, and northwest by the States of Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama and Florida and extending to the seaward boundary with Mexico and Cuba in the area formerly named as the Gulf of Mexico. The Secretary shall subsequently update the GNIS to reflect the renaming of the Gulf and remove all references to the Gulf of Mexico from the GNIS, consistent with applicable law. The Board shall provide guidance to ensure all federal references to the Gulf of America, including on agency maps, contracts, and other documents and communications shall reflect its renaming."

(1/3) When sharing our #Syria control maps with people who follow the war in extreme detail online, we often get criticisms that we used the *wrong* colors - that is, we didn't follow the color scheme that later war geeks converged on in the years after we began our coverage...

#Syria: In stunning end to years of frozen conflict, religious hardline rebel group has overrun much of #Aleppo, country's 2nd biggest city. www.reuters.com/world/middle... 2023 map attached, but this is first significant change to rebel control in Syria since 2020. #geography #middleeast
