The Palgrave Handbook of Science and Technology Studies in Education, brings together leading scholars working at the intersection of Science and Technology Studies (STS) and educational research. The handbook explores how knowledge, technologies, infrastructures, data, expertise, and material practices shape educational systems and experiences. The handbook demonstrates the growing importance of STS perspectives in educational research. Across its six thematic sections, contributors explore topics ranging from actor-network theory, educational technologies, testing and assessment, and data infrastructures to governance, artificial intelligence, and the history of educational knowledge.

POISED welcomes professor Matthew Clarke as a visiting senior research fellow and invites all to attend his seminars on Critical Policy Analysis in Education and Poetics of Education. Each seminar will be held at Tampere University's city centre campus, in Virta building, room 255, from 12:00 to 16:00. POISED congratulates Tuuli From, postdoctoral researcher on being awarded a four-year Academy Research Fellowship by the Research Council of Finland for her project Built language policy: Architecture, biopolitics and disciplinary power in co-located Finnish- and Swedish-language schools in Finland (POLYCO), The project examines policy discourses, planning processes, and everyday spatial practices in co-located Finnish- and Swedish-language schools in bilingual Finland.

A major new handbook is set to contribute significantly to research at the intersection of education and Science and Technology Studies (STS): The Palgrave Handbook of Science and Technology Studies in Education. Bringing together an international team of editors and contributors, the volume addresses an increasingly important area of scholarship. It focuses on the dynamic interplay between science, technology, and educational practices, offering a comprehensive overview of current developments in this emerging field.

Saturday 13.6.202613:00–15:00 Edu’s cafe, Virta, Tampere University Argentinian-Brazilian professor of philosophy of education Walter Kohen will visit Finland for the first time in June. In addition to participating in the Dialogue in Democratic Education conference at the University of Oulu (Democratic dialogue), he will also stop in Tampere, where we will host an informal discussion session as an afternoon research meeting.

Professor Antti Saari delivered his inaugural lecture at Tampere University on May 11th, offering a wide-ranging reflection on the role of educational science in shaping how schooling is understood, governed, and transformed. Drawing on historical examples and his own research, he examined how educational expertise has long promised to make learning and teaching more precise, effective, and responsive to societal needs, while also raising critical questions about the assumptions underlying these ambitions.

This time, PhD, university lecturer Heikki Kinnari from the University of Helsinki will give a talk on the topic 'Rage against the ability-capital machine: cognitive capitalism, lifelong learning and acts of resistance’.  Kinnari’s presentation introduces a forthcoming research project on resistance to lifelong learning under (bio)-cognitive capitalism.

Miten yliopistot estävät vastarintaa? Tästä aiheesta tiedetään yllättävän vähän. POISED-tutkimusryhmän tutkijat Tuomas Tervasmäki ja Tuukka Tomperi yhdessä UNIDEMO-tutkimushankkeen kanssa käsittelevät aihetta uudessa julkaisussa. Tutkimusartikkeli jäsentää, miten yliopistolaisten harjoittamaa vastarintaa ehkäistään, vaiennetaan ja estetään nyky-yliopistoissa.  Tutkimusta varten haastatellut 36 demokratia-aktiivia esittävät konkreettisia esimerkkejä säädöksistä, jotka ehkäisevät demokraattista osallistumista, sekä käytännöistä, jotka ovat johtaneet paikoitellen pelon ilmapiiriin, vastarinnan tukahtumiseen ja yliopistolaisten enemmistön passiivisuuteen.

Our POISED Quarterly seminar continues with Karin Murris, who is Professor of Early Childhood Education at University of Oulu. In her presentation, Murris proposes childing as a post-age, postqualitative research methodology that radically reconfigures agency, identity, and “the Other” in child studies. Through a playful video clip of seven-year-old Aatu’s death-play with plasticine, Murris explores how childing unsettles human exceptionalism, adult-centrism, and the assumption that subjectivity or identity precedes research.

Good news for POISED! KONE foundation published its funding decisions in December 2025. Antti Saari received funding for  a three year project examining subtle traces of the past in new school spaces. Moreover, POISED researcher Jan Varpanen received funding as a post-doctoral reseacher in the project Microbial Childhood: Restor(y)ing Daycare Ecologies II led by Professor Zsuzsa Millei. Our next POISED-Quarterly seminar will take place on 20 November 2025, featuring Anni Piironen as the speaker. The session will be chaired by Jan Varpanen. In her presentation, Piironen examines Michel Serres' concept of the parasite and combines it with empirical data to interpret the conditions for encounter in the pedagogical relationship. By analyzing the teacher's feelings of anger, she outlines the basis for a new theory of pedagogical relationship.  Session will be held in Zoom, and can be accessed via this link. They are open to everyone – welcome! 

POISED quarterly is a new online research seminar hosted by the Political Philosophies and Sociologies of Education (POISED) -research group, based at Tampere University, Finland. The seminar gathers together critical societal research both internationally and from Finland, creating a forum for academic discussion on topical themes in education. The theme for academic year 2025–2026 is “Trouble in education”. The seminar explores issues or perspectives that deal somehow with trouble(s) in education or present a view that is itself troubling, turning something previously familiar into unfamiliar or problematised.

Väitöskirjatutkija ja kasvatusfilosofi Pasi Takkinen tutkii kestävyydenjälkeistä aikaa eli post-sustainability-käsitettä, joka ilmentää tutkijoiden epävarmuutta ja huolta kestävyyden tulevaisuudesta. Hänen keväällä 2025 julkaisemansa laaja kirjallisuuskatsaus tarkastelee eri tieteenalojen keskustelua siitä, onko kestävyyden käsite enää relevantti ja mitä kestävyydenjälkeinen aika voisi tarkoittaa. Tutkimuksen mukaan antroposeenin edetessä perinteinen kestävyyskäsitys on joutunut kyseenalaistetuksi, ja monet tutkijat pohtivat, millainen tulevaisuus on mahdollinen, jos kestävyyttä ei enää voida saavuttaa.
