so people had to say "look you can't be insta-DQing kids because they had what looked like an asthma attack in 2nd grade. Those rules are now excluding enough perfectly suitable recruits that they're affecting our ability to make mission." that took a while. it's probably still very dumb

when I joined in 2009, the draconian insistence from every recruiter was "you have never had any medical care, ever. You were born on the dinner table. You do not know what a 'hospital' or 'pediatrician' are." GENESIS ruined this strategy but kept all of the stringent rules for medical conditions

I have one other straightforward objection. We already have a gigantic project to prepare the nation's youth for success and to make them into civic-minded, productive, and moral adults. It's called the public school system. Why would 13th and 14th grade do any better of a job than K-12?

Drafting a whole bunch of malcontents (which many will be, even if they would be content elsewhere) is a recipe for disaster. Conscript military branches put up with this disaster because they see it as a necessary cost. Self-inflicting it for no real reason would poll about as well as herpes

As somebody who was not ready for college at 18 but was very ready at 23 after doing a term in the Marine Corps: this would be a good idea for some but would be immediately hated by the vast majority of people

sadistically giving a disgraced celestial spirit the choice between "APPLEBEES" or "TGI FRIDAYS" when the spirit has no idea what "apples," "bees," or "Fridays" are, let alone the concept of a bad nationwide sit-down chain bar and grill, or the idea of a "line cook"

I imagine that this guy is not online in the slightest, and all of his pondering of Truth, Beauty, and Gender has been performed within the constant but unpredictable 3-second pauses that occur between moving a skillet on/off the heat and putting salt on something he just pulled out of the fryer

in many ways this is heartening (the American people are not actually committed to atrocities) and in many ways it is profoundly depressing (the American people have no moral virtue and can only be made to care or not care based on how it plays out as spectacle).

The analogy that I've started using is "losing sports team," and more specifically a losing sports team that is losing in boring, futile ways. Fans have myriad breaking points, but it's simply not fun to cheer them on anymore, and eventually people stop taking time out of their day to watch

getting sports coaches to say "I absolutely will bench you for talking that way about women" is left as an exercise for the reader and is, unfortunately, a case where the chuds currently have a clear advantage in numbers

An exception that is worth thinking about is sports. It's one of the few cases where a positive male role model is in a position to punish somebody for character reasons and the kid is likely to say "oh I should work on my character" rather than quitting the team and continuing to be a turd

My attitude is less of compassion for Pike and more of "you people are the manifestation of the State, performing a task of the utmost gravity. You do not get a single oopsie or fucko-boingo. If you cannot do the job with the professionalism that this requires then you don't get to do it at all."

So in practice it's a 401(k) that you withdraw a big chunk out of, tax free, as a lump sum when you retire

POGtastic @pogtastic.bsky.social · 07/10/2026
The original intent was similar to a Flexible Savings Account, just not awful (since you don't forfeit the remainder). I don't think that the creators intended its actual use (always pay for medical expenses out of pocket, save your receipts for 30 years, and file for reimbursement).

after maxing out our 401(k)s, our employee stock purchase plans, the HSA that we're using as another tax-sheltered retirement account, chipping into the 529 for the kiddos, and putting money into our house and car maintenance funds, it's pretty hard to make ends meet

They lasted two days before my uncle was enlisted to fly in and keep us occupied for the remainder of the week, which he did with Standard Uncle Parenting (feeding us gargantuan quantities of ice cream and fast food and letting us do whatever at the park as he sat on a bench and read a book).

My parents fondly recall the time that my grandparents (in their early 60s) insisted that they could look after three boys for a week so that my parents could go to Hawaii. Reader, they could not. We were actually really good kids! we were still a Handful

(raising hand) I like sprawl honestly the issue is that I cut off a Wiccan gal in Boston traffic when I was 16 and was cursed to have slightly trashy neighbors for the rest of my life. With my detached suburban house, my trashy neighbors are 20 meters away rather than sharing a wall and/or ceiling

My wife's workplace refers to "trauma entries" - patients whose injuries are extensive enough that they need to be transferred to a better-equipped hospital. Whenever she sees an electric skateboard or scooter she refers to them as "future trauma entries"

Oregon is weird but in different ways. More people recreationally shoot, so the average guy on the skeet range is more likely to be Normal. but the mainstream Oregon GOP is way, way worse. A little less race war stuff being bandied about in the Oregon skeet clubhouse than in Massachusetts though

POGtastic @pogtastic.bsky.social · 05/10/2026
This is because in Texas basically everybody shoots recreationally, and in Massachusetts it's a tiny subculture. That subculture is nuts.

The only time I've actually done the "ugh HR" thing was when our group was hiring and HR was trying to get a handle on our technical requirements for candidates. The requirements were a mess and HR being non-technical was not actually the problem!

the fact that more money mollifies me, of course, reveals my economic preference for higher compensation rather than better working conditions. and a union of Mes would continue to push for "indispensable and gets paid a lot while also complaining a lot"

My much bigger gripe is that it is impossible for me to take vacation. My work is relatively easy, but there is nobody to cover for me, and taking vacation just means I have to fit the same work into fewer hours. My boss has responded to this with "you're doing a great job. have more money"

The latter could "lock in," as the kids say, and knock out their work in 40 hours, but they like Posting, taking 2-hour lunches, etc. Our salaried work culture is indifferent to such people, as opposed to an hourly compensation structure that would quickly start to micromanage them
