We must chart a new path forward that protects our privacy. As people across the country rise up against cameras tracking their every move, Congress must act to protect privacy and dismantle the surveillance state. Read more from POGO's surveillance expert, Don Bell: bit.ly/4ysP423
If the federal government is allowed to use unrestrained AI to spy on the American public, one of our most important rights — the right to privacy — will be obliterated.

Your personal data is for sale, and the buyers could include ICE, the FBI, and the Pentagon. This should be illegal, but it isn't. Tell Congress to change that. Because it's long past time for real reform: bit.ly/4cPp1JH

There is no democracy without privacy. Flock cameras are being used by law enforcement agencies across the country to collect information on you as you drive by. This is textbook mass surveillance.

What tackling fraud really requires is a commitment to oversight and accountability systems, not performative outrage. @veritasdhg.bsky.social spoke to Congress about this yesterday:

Thank you @peters.senate.gov for calling out the administration ignoring these GAO audits. If our government is serious about saving taxpayer dollars and spending responsibly, it's vital that the administration cooperate with Congress's nonpartisan watchdog. OMB must start there.

WATCH: @warren.senate.gov is right: we can't allow NDAs to restrict government employees from blowing the whistle. NDAs can discourage people from exercising their legal rights-- and stop us all from finding out about waste and fraud in our government.

In February, a measles outbreak swept through the facility, with at least 14 confirmed cases and 112 people placed in isolation, leading to a two-week lockdown. This is just ONE example of MANY dangerous issues that have occurred under their care.

What kind of problems have occurred under Loyal Source’s care at Camp East Montana? Well, ICE’s own detention oversight office found the facility violated at least *49* standards for immigration detention during an inspection earlier this year.
An illustration in faded reds, blues, and purples shows people suffering in detention and separated into rooms. In one room, a child looks lost, while four other people appear in various states of unrestful sleep or illness. In another room, a lone person sits and looks into the middle distance. Another room shows a solitary person holding their head. The last room shows someone sleeping or ill lying on the floor.

Loyal Source Gov't Services is the subcontractor in question. Their care in DHS facilities has been scrutinized for YEARS. But past investigations of the company didn’t stop ICE contractors from bringing on Loyal Source as a medical provider at this camp.

Camp East Montana is the nation’s largest ICE detention facility, but its current medical provider has a yearslong paper trail of poor management and substandard medical care. Follow along to learn more ⬇️

Whistleblower protections are being systematically dismantled, but it’s not too late for lawmakers to fight to reinforce them. Read more: bit.ly/3RFkXUh
Since the founding of this country, often in its most perilous moments, ordinary people have summoned the courage to speak truth to power. During times of war, scandal, injustice, and fear, people of conscience have helped change the course of history. If we want the truth to continue coming out, we must defend those who bring it to light. -POGO Senior Policy Counsel Joe Spielberger, “Congress Must Protect Whistleblowers After a Year of Attacks”

A key section of a post-9/11 surveillance law is up for reauthorization in Congress. POGO Policy Counsel Don Bell answers your questions about why it matters: bit.ly/4mJb43u
Arguments that closing the data broker loophole should be disconnected from FISA reform fail to acknowledge a key aspect of why closing the loophole is so important: There are virtually no rules that regulate how government agencies protect Americans’ privacy when buying information from data brokers.

"As Congress considers validating this war through dedicated, supplemental defense spending legislation with a $200 billion price tag, it needs to consider that our spending should be guided by thoughtful strategy and supported by the kind of national commitment and deliberation that comes from the regular hearings and legislative processes. Hasty, vague supplemental spending only validates the minimal, poorly executed strategic efforts of this administration."

This week, POGO's @veritasdhg.bsky.social testified before the Senate. In his testimony, he outlined the importance of oversight, what it is-- and, importantly, what is ISN'T. Read more of what he had to say: bit.ly/4q3Ggei
"Targeting perceived political enemies with spurious claims of misconduct or illegality, for example, is not oversight.

Threatening to go after nonprofit groups and philanthropic foundations on the basis of ideological or political disagreements is not oversight.

Indiscriminately firing large numbers of federal employees and unlawfully withholding duly enacted funding is not a legitimate exercise in oversight.

Congress burying its head in the sand and allowing all of this is not oversight."

This week, the Senate Homeland Security and Gov't Affairs Committee is having a hearing on the nomination of Paul Ingrassia to lead the Office of Special Counsel. He's a dangerous nominee, and we all need to speak up. Here's a script you can use to call your senators:
Call your senators at
202-224-3121
and say:

Hello, my name is [blank] and I’m a constituent from [blank]. I’m calling to urge the senator to publicly oppose the nomination of Paul Ingrassia to lead the Office of Special Counsel.
Not only is he completely unqualified, but he has called government workers “parasites” and promoted conspiracy theories.
He should not lead an agency that is responsible for protecting federal whistleblowers and employees.
I urge the senator to reject this nomination.
