GLORIA STEINEM, for me, was an ally, a sister. Like our mutual friend bell hooks, Gloria was truth, constantly evolving, even about her flaws, always ready to fight for justice for all. She supported my work in many ways, including funding critical things around Black manhood.

This will be my third New York City Marathon (26.2 miles), SUN NOV 1. I’ve been a distance runner since high school but first marathon in some years. 9 weeks to go, miles being revved up, and lots of yoga and other maintenance too. Today, July 15, is my wife’s birthday. As I say in poem I wrote, my wife is truly gift from God. She is most beautiful spirit, so smart, and one of the kindest human beings I’ve ever known. I am beyond in love with her, I am in awe with her. Water is her sacred place, and so it is today.
