If you are worried about climate change (especially with the recent heat waves) you need to be promoting BOTH adaptation and addressing the causes of climate change. It's both/and not either/or. People are suffering or dying & we collectively have a lot of knowledge and strategies that could help.

The other day I was walking through my neighborhood when I noticed a pawpaw tree with pawpaws on it! The woman who planted it was on her porch and we got to talking- turns out this is the first time that it has fruited. She's gonna call me when they are ripe so I can try growing the seeds!

Spend a while this morning #foraging for trailing blackberry, one of my favorite native berries. Took me a while to pick a gallon- I'm now more certain that I want to trellis some for next year!

Cool plant of the week: Coralroot! This lovely little flower is one of our PNW native orchids, but you might notice it's missing something- leaves! This species is a myco-heterotroph! Aka, instead of photosynthesizing like most plants, it parasitizes fungal mycelium in the soil!

First oyster mushrooms of 2025! I love them, and they're so common around here, and I especially appreciate that most other people overlook their awesomeness. #fungifriends why yes, that is my hat serving as an impromptu foraging basket, why do you ask?

Trilliums are just gorgeous, ok? It's also really cool that their seeds are dispersed by ants, and that the seeds need to go through two winters and a summer before they germinate! Truly one of the joys of spring!

I recently learned my local parks department has a volunteer habitat restoration position, which means I now get to go into this park and remove invasive species like Himalayan blackberries and replace them with native species like blackcap raspberries. It doesn't look like much, but it's a start! 🌱

Did you know that Washington state has native orchids? We even have multiple species! This in is Goodyera oblongifolia, aka, western rattlesnake plantain, and while it's flowers aren't the showiest, their leaves are pretty neat! I most often see them in pretty deep shade under Douglas firs.
Picture of the forest floor- we see a small rosette of green leaves poking through the first duff. The leaves have white markings on them, outlining their veins with more white down the center.

So this post is for my own benefit because I keep mistaking these two during the dormant season & at this point it's getting embarrassing 😅 In fairness to me, when they're gastromically relevant, they're very different & they do both have kinda pointy buds that are alternate.

Went and helped out at the Native Plant Salvage event this morning, which was really fun. I did spend most of the morning digging up Chimaphila umbellata- it was a tangle! The licorice fern was more fun because I was able to just roll it up like a cinnamon roll.

I just think it's a cute loaf. I'm also tickled that I've gotten back in the groove of making #sourdough around my work schedule. This one has poppy seeds :D
A picture of the loaf before baking- it is circular, and you can see the spiral outline of the proofing basket formed of flour. A golden brown, rustic looking round loaf, with a jagged crack because I didn't score it, and some poppy seeds peeping through from the inside

You know, I think I'm noticing a pattern: a warm spell in January or early February makes me think that it'll be a warmer than usual spring, and then my over excited hopes are smashed against the icy ground when cold weather returns. Now that I think about it I think this has happened several years

Anybody an experienced #basket maker? I'm curious if smoke tree (cotinus), or crepe myrtle can be used? Looking for something I can grow in a suburban yard that I won't have to worry about interfering with the sewer pipe, and those two were on a list of suggested trees I found. Thanks! #basketry

And yeah, I did find some nettles, but I'm going to let them have some more warm weather and really get going beside I pick any. The Himalayan blackberry though... I did cut back a bunch and harvested some buds. Gonna check some spots closer to home tomorrow

This is definitely the best mushroom picture from this weekend- I went to my normal yellow foot and hedgehog mushroom spots and there were loads of deer hoof prints but hardly any mushrooms! I think the deer decided it was time for dinner! #fungifriends

Results of tonight's improvisational bread baking (aka, my kitchen scale died so I went by ~feel~ instead) the bagels turned out really good, and the thing that might be described as a twisted olive-rosemary sourdough loaf, was a good first step towards an idea I have. Fun times! #sourdough #yolo

Tonight's adventure: bread improv! Now, you might be saying something like "you can't improvise bread. It's baking! You need to measure & follow a recipe." Wrong! You only need that if you want dependable and reproducible results! With sufficient hubris (or experience), you can just try things out!

Who is really good at winter twig identification? I've got two small saplings and I've been told both are cottonwoods, which doesn't seem right because they're pretty different. I'm good with some winter twigs, but mostly the species I forage from!

Craterellus calicornucopioides, only a handful, but what a find! If you want to compare rarity look at iNaturalist, there's only been 15 sightings of these guys reported in Washington state, while chanterelles have over two thousand sightings. So imagine my excitement! #fungifriends #foraging

I'm going to have a forest of yuzu! ... in ten to twenty years, lol. For those who haven't heard of them yet, yuzu are a hardy (for citrus) lemon-like fruit from China & Japan. They're supposed to be hardy down to 0f, which is great for a citrus.

I'm very pleased to still be finding chanterelles in western Washington state at this time of year, and very glad to be finding yellow foot and hedgehogs! I've got good spots for the other two, but I'm still figuring out what the hedgehogs like. #fungifriends #foraging
A double chanterelle mushroom is being held up in the forest- in the back ground, you can see salal, sword fern, and Douglas fir trees. A small hedgehog mushroom is being held up in the forest- in the background sword fern and big leaf maple leaves that have fallen down. A charming family of winter chanterelles, aka yellow foot, growing up out of the forest floor. I forget what the ground cover is, but there's moss and salal, and some big leaf maple leaves.

I need to get out and pick some of these soon- they're one of our native huckleberries, and they're pretty much the last thing to ripen. They taste even better after a frost!
A hand is holding a branch of evergreen huckleberry, showing the shiny dark berries. Key characteristics for ID include that they're evergreen, frost hardy, have small leathery leaves with a toothed edge. Earlier in the year you can see there blueberry-family flowers.

One of my friends is going to get a lot of small surprises in about 4 months. In our climate, species tulips and crocuses have a growth cycle that matches our precipitation cycle very well, so you can plant them and forget them. They come up early and are dormant again before people start mowing.
There is a wheelbarrow along a foot path in the grass, and about a foot and a half (45cm ish) on the other side of the path is a long line of open holes, and a bag of bulbs. The holes have now been filled, and the sod or back on top, so it's not super noticeable.

Here's a picture of my tiniest plant currently, a single leaf prop of a Pinguicula cyclosecta- no, not the sundew, down below that. You can just see the new leaves starting off the end of it. Those stands it's growing on are sphagum moss, to give you a sense of scale.
A sundew dominates the top of the photo, with its bright dew droplets hanging off hundreds of tiny tentacles.

Below that is a small green leaf, with two tiny leaves growing off its base.
